I booked a 10-day private tour with Salvadorean Tours. Eduardo, the trip designer did a great job on my itinerary. My guide Eduardo was fantastic! We covered many volcanoes, national parks, archeological sites, culture routes, turtle trip, scenic drive and boat ride, amazingly beautiful. The turtle capture trip is very unique, informative and meaningful. I’m planning to come back to do more and see baby turtles go back to the sea. The Fonseca boat tour is unexpectedly beautiful, different views than my previous visit to tropical islands. I’ve traveled around 90 countries and worked with quite a few tour guides. Eduardo’s passion, knowledge, thoughtfulness is definitely among the top. My El Salvador trip is truly memorable. Highly recommend Salvadorean Tours and highly recommend my guide Eduardo!

The hike to Santa Ana was fantastic. Glad we got there earlier and beat the crows on this Sunday hike. The group was small and organized. Pick up was on time and the spot for lunch was so rewarding after the hike. Highly recommended if you visit El Salvador.

This tour was the highlight of my trip to El Salvador. This is a one-of-a-kind experience you should not miss when visiting the country. The views up here are breathtaking. Make sure to bring water and a light meal for your trip. I stopped by some pupusas on our way to the volcano.

Benjamin was our tour leader and Vitelio was our driver. They make an excellent team, they're knowledgeable about the history of El Salvador, and they are fluent English speakers. They answered all of our questions and made sure we had a hospitable experience in the tour. During our hike up the volcano we were also helped by Leonel and Elizabeth. They assist tourists going up and down the volcano.

Our guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. He allowed us to set the pace for the hike and we never felt pressured or rushed. He took photos of us once we made it to the top that turned out great. We were also able to stop before the hike to get snacks/drinks. He made us feel comfortable and we learned a lot along the way.

Prior to hiking up Santa Ana, be sure to have eaten a good breakfast and take some nutritious snacks or get at the park station at the base. Our tour guide Benjamin enlisted some help to get our group safely up and down Santa Ana. While at the top, he explained more about the volcano and additional history. The views at the top were remarkable! Such a memorable experience and worth trying at least once maybe twice in your lifetime. Safe travels!

This tour is hands down well worth it! The guide was awesome as well. Very friendly, knowledgable, informative and went out of his way to make sure I had the best experience. The Flower Route is a great way to get to know several towns in El Salvador. You will see spectacular views, beautiful towns, murals painted by obviously talented artists, have the opportunity to eat all types of local food, observe the Salvadorean people going about their daily lives.... I can't say enough about it... 😊👌❣

My tour guide Eduardo picked me up on time and drove me to the mountain, stopping from time to time to point out sights to see and good views of local features (beautiful lakes and the sites of pre-colonial temples, for example). The hike was not too strenuous, but not disappointingly easy (I am in pretty good shape and in my 30s and was huffing and sweating, but by the end I wasn't exhausted). Eduardo was an excellent source of knowledge about the local flora and fauna, identifying plants and birds and talking about their features or how they come to El Salvador. He was also well-versed in geology and volcanology, explaining the parts of the volcano when we reached the crater. It was a beautiful day on the way up, but after we took a break at the top and had lunch it started to rain, so we descended in the deluge. Even in the rain the volcano was beautiful, and it let up after we got back under the tree canopy.

Point is, I had fun and would recommend the trip to those interested in hiking this volcano.

The tour was amazing in no small part due to our English speaking tour guide Benjamin. Benjamin was very knowledgeable, not just about the Volcano & surrounding vegetation but past and current Salvadoran culture and government. His pride in his country and culture was refreshing and enlightening. My partner and I highly recommend Salvadorean Tours and their guides through TripAdvisor.com.

On to the hike. Benjamin parked us at El Tibet which gave us access to the volcano trail which shaved a good 45 min - hour off of our hike time. The ranger station had snacks and drinks for sale at very affordable prices compared to national parks in the USA.

The first part of the trail was well shaded and jungle like. This part of the trail was mostly dirt and tree roots with steps created that made it not too difficult to be on. The elevation of the trail increased gradually for the most part.

As the jungle gave way the trail became a little more rocky and steep. The view here of neighboring volcano, Izalco and the Cerro Verde was incredible. Now more desert vegetation was visible:Agave plant. With less shade and more rocks on the trail the hike becomes arduous. This is where a hat, sunblock and proper hiking shoes are needed.

Benjamin’s love of volcanoes comes beaming through. He erupts with details of past volcanic activity, the effect they had on local people, crops and the economy, and the markings they left on the land. He points out these markings and we are again amazed.

We are almost at the summit. Earlier travel goers are coming back down the Volcano and telling us “It’s not too much further.” “you got this!” Words of encouragement that were greatly needed and welcomed. The trail now is more steep with even more rocks. The air is getting thinner and there is no shade. The weather gods were looking out for us though, as the mountain was being shrouded in cloud cover to protect us from the sun.

The summit of the Volcano and the turquoise acidic lake inside its crater were a sight to behold. The surroundings resemble science fiction films on deserted alien planets of rock, dust, sand and steam.

Everyone at the Summit was super friendly, exhausted from the hike, proud they made it to the top and willing to tell their story. A collective brother and sisterhood of Volcano climbers . An experience we will not soon forget.

Take home points: wear hiking boots, sunblock, and a hat. Bring water and snacks. Bring a towel or bandana as you will sweat… ALOT!!
