Absolutely one of the best experiences of our life! First, of course, seeing a volcano is bucket list - five stars all day!! But second, OX was the most wonderful company I could have dreamed of using! They were attentive, organized, honest, helpful, encouraging, and just wonderful! Our guide Romeo really paid attention to our group and made sure everything went as smooth as possible!

Which leads to - this is a mountain next to a volcano! It is really, really a hard hike. It's straight uphill for miles and miles. We ended up having pouring hail for the last 45 minutes of our hike - and it was not easy. Not only the endurance for the hike - but also the lack of air as you get higher and higher. And it's freezing. Be prepared!

Having said that - our two boys (10&13) were able to do it with us.

The cabins are tiny - its one little step up from a tent - and it leaves the least footprint in the land. It is tight! But the views are outstanding just sitting up in your sleeping bag! And in the hail - a wooden structure was everything!

All in all, the trip couldn't have been better! We went to the informational class the night before - and I would recommend going. Thank you OX and Romeo for giving us two days our family will never forget!!

The guides were sweet and helpful and couldn’t have tried harder to make us comfortable and the food was surprisingly deliciously and the fire cozy and communal. I was really pleased I chose these guides.
It is very very cold overnight so definitely bring your warmest ski clothing.

Hiking volcanos in Guatemala is challenging due to the altitude, steep trails, and lots of dust. However, getting close to Fuego volcano is a unique and rewarding experience. You can see volcanos spitting out fire and lava. The best views are at dusk and at night, of course.
I do not recommend hiking with Ox. They care about profits and not about providing the best experience for their customers. First of all, the group was too large, more than 30 people. The group was not split into smaller groups based on how quickly you can hike, as it was promised. I felt I was rushed. Note that even if you go hiking a lot, you may hike slower these volcanos, as you are at very high elevation. I was even discouraged by guides to hike Acatenango. I went only to Fuego. They put 6 people in a cabin and we were crammed like sardines. No one could sleep, as you could not move. Otherwise you would have to elbow everyone around you. The food provided by Ox is terrible and I got duck from it. The guides didn’t really look for their customers. One time I went wrong way and other company’s guides told me that I was going wrong way. When I was coming down Fuego volcano, it was dark, dusty, and steep. I fell down and strangers helped me to get up and move. There was no Ox guide around. They were rushing.
I am giving 5 stars for the experience of seeing Fuego volcano up close. But I am giving zero stars for Ox.

We did the overnight stay in acatenango and it was an incredible experience. The hike itself was challenging, but the guides made sure we were okay. I paid $200 quetzales for the porter to carry my bag, but most of the group carried their own bag. If you have a 40L hiking backpack, that will get you up there. I rented a backpack for free. Make sure to wear hiking shoes. Tennis shoes won’t suffice and Ox doesn’t rent shoes. Also, have a mask or bandana since the trail gets dusty, specially if you do the double whammy. We had plenty of rest spots and the lunch and dinner provided by Ox were very filling. The cabins are really small and they fit 6 people in them.

The views were breathtaking. The volcano erupts all night so don’t expect to get sleep. Both sunrise and sunset were amazing.

Our guides Chino and Leo were great. Their dogs Tarzan and Oso accompanied us all the way as well.

The initial experience was good, Ox was responsive on WhatsApp and helped us get a date. We had to make a prepayment though, which is normal. We paid a bit more already 2,5 days in advance. However, then my partner got sick, we had to cancel. Canceling was very easy and Ox was quick to just remove us, we got none of the money back though and there was no suggestions at all to find a new date. Since this is one of the most expensive agencies around I’d expect them to share the burden of someone getting sick and not make money off of it. Dissapointed.

WOW!! What a trip!! Best hike I have ever done and I am so happy I chose to do it with OX Expeditions. I did the two day Acatenango tour, which was extremely challenging, beautiful and the guides were exceptional. Fuego will take your breath away. I guarantee it. We got four meals included in this tour, the first being a traditional Guatemala breakfast at a local restaurant where it was nice to get to know everyone in our group. Every meal was very filling, and made me even more ready to tackle this hike, and being Gluten free, they really catered to my dietary needs. My guides Romeo and Leo were fantastic and maintained the perfect pace for everyone in the group, while having many breaks. OX also provides all of the gear you need including clothing and backpacks, as well as their own cabins at base camp, so we didn’t have to carry up camping and cooking gear like most other companies. Wine and hot chocolate around a bonfire while watching the lava spew from Fuego is the best feeling I have ever experienced. OX Expeditions also has the crater run (run around Acatenango’s crater without stopping, falling, or walking) which no other company has! Although it was the hardest thing I have ever done, I succeeded and got the free T-Shirt! If you beat the record though, your trip is FREE. Brilliant idea.
11/10, amazing experience, and book with Ox Expeditions. You won’t regret it.

The Acatenango over night tour changed my life! It was challenging, rewarding and truly unbelievable. And you MUST go with Ox Expeditions.

Guides 10/10: The guides were qualified, they set a manageable pace and adapted to everyone in the group. They were funny and light hearted and made this difficult adventure doable. They were friendly and personable and made you feel very safe and taken care of.

Food 10/10: The food was amazing, not to mention the wine and marshmallows around the bonfire in the evening!! They provide 4 meals. FOUR!! There were other groups in different tours that were eating ramen noodles. No thank you.

Gear 10/10: Ox provides all gear!! From back packs to camping and even warm layers. We saw people on the summit without hats and warm sweaters. We also researched other companies that charge extra for these items, with Ox it is all included.

Accommodation 10/10: Picture this, you just used all you energy to climb to base camp you’re tired and cold and you have to set up and sleep in a tent. NO THANK YOU! Ox has adorable cabins with the BEST view of Fuego. You’re protected from the elements, you have a mattress and sleep bags already set up waiting for you. And better yet, you DON’T have to carry big sleeping pads or cooking gear up and down the mountain because it’s already there.

As an avid hiker and someone who is very picky about how they spend their money, let me say, this tour is worth it. Four meals, accommodation ON A VOLCANO, gear and guides made this adventure one I will never forget 🌋
