Easily my favourite activity I have done in my last 4 weeks of travelling in South East Asia! The young men are so eager to teach and open to tell you everything you ever wanted to ask. I would highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in buddhism, meditation or simply the lao culture. I have loved every second of it and am deeply grateful to our guide Sante and also Sunan who were both fantastic.

Both tours were great! It was amassing to hear about the experience of our guide as a novice and be able to ask him questions about Buddhism and life in a monastery. The guided meditation was also a great experience! Our guide explained everything and we practiced twice. A great morning in Luang Prabang!

We did the cultural temple tour and guided meditation.

The cultural temple tour consisted of 1 temple, and was relatively short with good information. The guide was a former Novice with 9 years experience in monastic life. In case you are wondering, he did not wear orange robes - this was rather an authentic experience rather than a photo shop exercise.

We learnt about the monastic practises and observed the role they play in the broader social structure, providing education and board for youths with support of alms from the community. We liked that we did this first up, so that we could learn to be respectful of the rules and take more meaning from the (over-touristed) Alms ceremony.

We did find the tour somewhat pricey overall, with a cost for 2 people comparable to a river cruise with full dinner. Though socially conscious, there are other opportunities to give back in Luang Prabang (e.g. buy a brick promoted by Kaiphaen restaurant and buffalo ice cream folks also doing good things).

The highlight of the experience was certainly the meditation, and actually we did a seated, standing and walking variant in the temple. That really set a nice tone for our stay.

The guide was extremely generous in asking our questions, and I would encourage visitors not to be shy in making the most of the opportunity to learn.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review, James. We’re glad you were able to gain some valuable information from your experience. As outlined in our leaflets and on our website, we try to be as transparent as possible with where your money goes. The prices have been set to accommodate a number of different factors and calculated to allow us to have the greatest positive impact on the local community as a grassroots business. Thank you again for attending our tours and for aiding us on our mission of supporting former Novices and Monks transition from temple life to layperson life and preserving the traditional culture and customs of Laos.

Talking to our guide was great, the young ex novice shared his experiences and knowledge about Buddhism. He was really kind and fun to be around. I highly recommended the tour to everyone I spoke to when I was in Luang Prabang.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone to learn more about temples around Laos and a day in the life of a monk. You will meet a monk who is currently not practising and he will thoroughly explain to you the rules of a monk, the do’s and don’t’s of a monk and as a tourist and he will show you the different ways of meditating. It is culturally so insightful and I learnt things that I’ll carry with me throughout the rest of my travels. The whole thing lasts around 2-3 hours.

I took this tour at the first day of my holiday in Laos in order to get an introduction to this important part of Lao culture. Our guide explained to us the role of the monastaries in teaching and education, the life of the novices and monks, the key elements of buddhist believe, the buildings and symbols in the temple, and he answered all of our many questions. After that he introduced us to three types of meditation. I really enjoyed the tour, and I must say it opened my eyes to this important part of Lao Culture. You only see what you know! I recommend the tour to everybody who wishes to discover more about the beautiful temples and the life of the monks!

This was hands down one of the best activities I did whilst in Luang Prabang. I'd go as far to say that you shouldn't visit any temples before doing this tour. I especially enjoyed the meditation part and would recommend not skipping that as it was very insightful and quite special. If you want an authentic experience then don't miss this tour.

What an amazing experience and an immersive way to gain a better understanding of Laos's spiritual side, plus debunk some myths or assumptions many of us have about Buddhism. I attended the tour one day, but the meditation was full (great how they limit the groups to seven people), so I went back the next day for the session. That, in fact, enriched my experience as I got to hear the background from two novices. Both men were friendly, patient in answering my many questions and super accommodating to make visitors feel comfortable. I'd highly recommend this to anyone, especially if you plan to watch the morning alms ceremony. Join Orange Robes first and your experience will be enriched a thousandfold.

This was so interesting and informative I think everyone needs to do this before they go to all the temples!
It was a nice quiet temple to learn about the temples and novice, monks and Buddhism.
I originally signed up only for the temple tour and at last minute signed up for the guided meditation as well because the guide and another guest were talking about it and sounded so interesting I signed up. So glad I did. It was such a great class and I’ll try to implement the meditation and breathing in my life immediately! It was the most relaxing class!
Now when I go to temple, I understand more of what is happening!
Highly recommend this tour to everyone!
