A truly magical coffee and chocolate experience at a depth that is unparalleled. Thank you, @David for an incredible tour. We got to taste cacao beans raw (which has the same sort of texture and feel as a mango!) and learn the whole process from processing the beans to then tasting all the different ways people enjoy the different parts of the cacao bean. We got to watch how chocolate is made in “grandma’s kitchen” and then taste both dark and milk chocolate with whatever additions we wanted to add to our bowl (I highly recommend trying Tajin in the chocolate- it is surprisingly really tasty!) Then the coffee experience was amazing too- to see how coffee is roasted, the difference between kinds of roasts (and why many of the beans we get in the supermarket are “over roasted”). It gave me a new appreciation for what coffee is and can be. The most amazing part of the whole experience is that we were there with our extended family which included 5 kids all under the age of 12 and they all enjoyed the experience throughout and were actively engaged by @David to participate in and enjoy the whole experience! Silly us for bringing tablets along thinking that they might get bored on a 2.5 hour excursion of this sort. I would HIGHLY recommend this if you have any interest in coffee or chocolate and want to have a fun and engaging experience in learning more about it in Costa Rica!

First, a couple of issues: Their tour description says “This is a private tour/activity. Only your group will participate.” It also says "maximum 8 people."
NOT ACCURATE!!! We were part of a group of 16 people.
Also, we were to be picked up from our hotel at 1:40 pm. We called twice because no one came. The driver finally arrived at 2:10 pm. the tour was to start at 2 pm, so the people who were already there had to wait as well. And it made our return to the hotel later than we anticipated.
That said, it was a fun group of diverse people, and the guide was very good. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend to others -- as long as you understand what to expect.

Even as someone who does not typically enjoy coffee, this tour was lots of fun! Given the elevation in La Fortuna, this tour was focused a bit more on chocolate and sugar cane which was fine by me. Our guide, David, had grown up working in the fields, so he was very knowledgeable with any questions the group brought to him. He was also genuinely curious about our local coffee cultures which created some fun group discourse. You get to try a few different types of raw cacao fruit during the tour along with all sorts of different forms of prepared cacao.

We took this tour on January 26, 2023 and found it to be informative and a reasonable value. If we hadn't purchased their whole bean coffee I'd be inclined to give them a 4-5 star rating.
However, the medium roast coffee beans we purchased in their small shop turned out to be extremely stale! We've tried them several mornings in a row now and have thrown the remaining beans out since it's undrinkable! Other varieties of Costa Rican coffee purchased at various grocery stores and brewed during our stay in country were excellent.
Take the tour, but beware of the coffee for sale in their shop!

Excellent tour for coffee and chocolate lovers alike! We sampled coffee and made our own chocolate mixtures. Also had cacao tea made Costa Rican style and it was delicious! We brought our 3 year old toddler and they were so accommodating. Our guide was Rosbi and he was super knowledgeable! Buy the souvenirs from their gift shop! I forgot to buy 2 more packs of coffee for a couple of family members and it was so expensive from 3rd party vendors!

Jorge picked us up from Arenal Springs Resort, was super friendly, so professional, and a great driver! (Drivers in Costa Rica can be pretty crazy)
We got to the North Fields Cafe and were immediately greeted by the staff and were directed to wash our hands and given a space to sit and wait for our tour to begin. (Really appreciated the Covid protocols - All the staff are boosted and vaxxed 👍)
David was our tour guide and he was phenomenal, he made everyone feel so welcomed and interacted with each person in the group (we even had a family of seven with very young kids).
David shared he started 3 years ago and didn’t know any English, speaking with him throughout the tour, you would never know he mastered the English language, he was incredibly adept at answering all of our questions and provided interesting tid bits that only a seasoned tour guide would know!
The tour consisted with a guided walk of the grounds for coffee and cacao, tasting of sugar cane juice (even a moonshine version which was strong but delicious!), chocolate tasting, and finally a coffee tasting. Both the coffee tasting and chocolate tasting gives you a chance to see the entire process and taste so many versions of chocolate and coffee 👍
Throughout the tour, David would share funny stories, historical facts, and have the group participate in every activity to help us learn and appreciate the things we take for granted when it comes to coffee and chocolate!!
This is by far one of the best tours I have been on in a long time and credit to the North Fields Cafe and the staff for creating such a memorable and enjoyable experience!! Additional shout out to David for making the tour so awesome!!!
The best way to sum things up is it was Pura Vida! 🤙

This was such an informative, educational tour and we got to drink and eat amazing coffee and chocolate throughout the experience - what more could you ask for? This family owned farm does an amazing job walking you through the history of coffee in Costa Rica, the processes after harvesting and how they roast the beans. Cocoa growing is also explained in great detail. We were able to taste the seeds fresh from the fruit, and then how it is treated after harvesting. Make sure you grab some chocolate tea is unique!

This was my favorite experience of the trip! Our guide Alberto was so knowledgeable about the process and you could tell he had a genuine love for his job and teaching others about Costa Rica's coffee and chocolate production. His excitement and education around coffee made us want to slow down the process and enjoy our morning routine around brewing our cup of coffee every day. If I come back to La Fortuna, no questions asked I would do this tour again.

This is an amazing tour! The first part is touring around the plantation and the second part is coffee and chocolate tasting. Alberto was our tour guide; he was super knowledgeable and a great guide! We did the 8am tour and ended being the only ones; they said the 8am tour time is always the least crowded so if you’re looking for a smaller tour group book the early tour! The chocolate was delicious and the coffee was amazing and tested so fresh. We even learned how to pick out good coffee beans for when we go back home!

We we’re trying to find an afternoon activity after doing the hanging bridges in the morning while we stumbled upon this tour. I can only say it was completely worth it! Alberto “Peto” José was our lovely funny guide and explained everything so clearly and in a funny way that the 2,5h tour flew by like it was nothing. For 40 dollars they even picked us up at our hotel. I can only say if you need to fill a gap for your morning or afternoon don’t hesitate to do this interesting and food fulfilling tour!

I drove myself, but I'd think it's only 15 minutes or so to the coffee tour. We were there from 9-12ish. A full morning. But, if you're driving, you could probably beg of at anytime if you needed because the whole tour is in the same place, which is right in town.
