I cannot say enough about how amazing this tour was for our family.
We only had one day in the area and this excursion let us experience all of the highlights.
It was definitely more rigorous than I anticipated but overall I enjoyed the challenge and was proud of what I accomplished. Even my 7 year old kept up - though she’s pretty conditioned to hiking so I’d honestly recommend this for kids 10 and up.
Our guide, Joseph, was incredible. He was funny, knowledgeable, and absolutely fantastic with my young kids. He paid so much attention to them and included them in everything. From having them help him spot animals, to asking them questions, to helping them navigate the treacherous terrain, he truly did it all. By the end of the night my 12 year old son was hugging him goodbye! Joseph also recommended a great restaurant for us to eat dinner at and even told us where we could buy a great cake for my daughter’s birthday.
10/10 recommend this day trip. Perfect weather. Perfect people, perfect scenery. Perfect guides. And perfect animals.

The full day adventure started out great!! Hiking around Arenal and the La Fortuna waterfall were amazing!! Keep fitness level in mid for those tour, it's noted well as moderate. Our guides Carlos & Chris were great!
Transportation was provided in a brand new van, which was very comfortable. The tour is 10 people with 1 guide per group; and there are multiple groups all traveling together in the same van.
We were really looking forward to the hot springs as the grand finale for the day, and we're beyond disappointed when we arrived at a hotel with hot pools - not the same as hot springs :( Otherwise the tour was great!

Honestly can’t recommend this enough ! From all tours I saw it was so affordable and so many things packed in a day. There is so much included and is a perfect your for people that aren’t in La Fortuna for long ! We got to see the Volcano and do the trail, do the waterfall, meet the indigenous community “Maleku” and learn from them, get a super tasty lunch and finish the day with drinks and hotsprings. You start at 8:00am and finish at 6:00pm and you don’t feel like you need to see or do anything else. For students and residents, there is a direct discount if you pay it at the office in La Fortuna !
A very big big shoutout to Eric for making us feel like part of his family. He made this trip incredible and was able to spot things in the trees that no one else could. Muchas gracias Eric por tu paciencia, conocimiento y amabilidad. lo apreciamos mucho 🤍

Incredible tour ruined by poor communication from company. Spent $380 on tours for my daughter and I who has travelled extensively in Central and South America. Paid for tours and also Jeep boat jeep trip the following day to get to Monte Verde. When the shuttle didn't arrive to collect us ( hour late). I telephoned Julio and also the guide to see what the delay was. After several calls, messages and no reply, our very kind hotel manage called and managed eventually to get hold of Julio. We were advised an error at the boat company meant we could not travel and were offered the same trip the following day. Whilst this may sound fair. I must point out, they had my number, no call received. Julio also chose to inform me at this point, we had underpaid by $20. He would only accept cash the previous day...not card!! I was not aware of this and again, they had my number to call and tell me. I explained we had already checked out, we'd been waiting in the heat for 2 hours at this point and had accommodation already booked and paid for in Monte Verde. He said the only option was a same day taxi and offered to contact his friend to see if they could take us, but made it clear, we would have to pay another $50 to do this. I asked him to check cost and phone me back ( at this point still had not had a call from him at all). the very kind hotel manager had found an uber for $100 and suggested Lava should pay as in her opinion, we had clearly been forgotten. I called Julio again, no answer nor a reply to a message. He then turned up, followed by his friend, at which point I felt i had no choice other than paying $100, to pay his friend to take us there. Julio said when we got to Monte Verde, he would get us discount on trips there 30-50% to make up for the situation. The truth is we paid $380 for the volcano, Waterall and hotspings and the following morning, the hanging bridges ($360) to Julio to include th e jeep boat jeep. We arrived at the hotel 3 hours later and also paid $55 more than anticipated. I messaged him that night re planned trips in Mont Verde ,but again never had any reply. I can say truthfully ne never replied to any of my calls or messages. There are lots of good reviews and I appreciate things can go wrong, however i feel the service and response was very poor and as such my overall experience was poor. A shame as the guides were very good. I look forward to any reply as my review is factual and I have been measured and fair in my review. I will not accept anything false in the reply.

So the day started off beautiful nice people fun guides Carlos and Cristian. We got to the waterfall and expected it to be a hike, but it was, in fact, 500 steep steps down to get to it and then go back up. It was difficult for a lot of us, but we pressed on. Had a nice pineapple snack and then visited an aboriginal village, which was very cool to experience. We then had lunch and saw some butterflies and toads and on to the arenal volcano "hike." We were told there would be a "chill' trail and a more aggressive trail. Well, the "chill trail" was the same as the other trail with steep steps and lava rocks. Many people were tripping on the path. I was completely out of breath, and my legs were shaking. My husband had to help me down. When I saw Christian coming down the hill, I told him that the trail wasn't chill at all and that I was having trouble, and he laughed and continued on. He was dishonest about the difficulty of the trek and now 2nd day in Costa Rica, and my legs are still in pain. I met some people at my hotel who had the same experience and were hurting. The company should mention the stairs in their advertising and not just call it a hike. Also, they should address the health issues of their guests. This is definitely not for everyone, and honesty is always the best policy. I do appreciate Carlos for his kindness and understanding.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear that the hike was tougher than you thought it would be. We do recommend people to use tripadvisor to get a better idea of our customers own experiences. We have limited space to describe a tour. Since physical strain is very relative we have the risk to be wrong in a description. If we call it tough (a fit person would say it isn't) or if we call it easy (a less fit person will say it isn't). For this reason its hard to be on the mark in our description. Luckely tripadvisor helps. Reading different reviews you can measure if something is the right fit for you. Thanks for the kind words about different aspects of the tour.

Wybe, the gentleman that heads up Red Lava Tours, really helped us out. We were looking for things to do during our 72 hour stay in La Fortuna and thank God we ran into him at his shop by the square.
He was very knowledgeable about the area and the different tours. He speaks multiple languages, including very good English.
But most importantly, he was there for us when we needed him. You see, our hotel was going to charge us for an extra night, because our tour went longer than expected because of a bigger group. Wybe called our hotel to explain the situation. And then, without us asking, he left his wife to come meet us at the end of the tour. He personally drove us back to our hotel in town, ensuring we wouldn’t be charged an extra $100.
For anyone reading this, more than likely, nothing will go wrong on your tour. But if something does, you can count on Wybe and Red Lava Tours to be there for you.
(He did not ask for this review, but I felt compelled to let people know about this company.)
He is the definition of Pure Vida!

I’m not a “guided tour” person. I like to explore on my own so this was out of my comfort mode. However, I have to give it to Santiago, our tour guide. No way I would have seen so much and learned so much no matter how much I’d researched. He’s a local that knows the area all his life and it makes all the difference in a world of tiny delicate and sometimes potentially deadly details. He somehow made a very diverse group of people behave as a group and embrace challenges that the heavy tropical rain tried to wash us out from. I’ll recommend Red Lava again and again.

Info page indicated they would pick you up at your hotel/Airbnb. I contacted the tour guide the day prior and they confirmed they were able to pick us up at our Airbnb. We waited over an hour, made multiple attempts to contact the tour company, and they never showed up. When I finally got a hold of them, they said they had been to our Airbnb, which was not true as we were waiting outside the entire time and no one came. They also made no effort to contact us and they did not reply to our multiple messages. As a result of this, we had to cancel our tour and scramble to make last minute plans for the day.

Sorry as I told you we where there but a bit early. We then tried to call you multple times but we couldn't get a hold of you. You called us very late to say that you where there and I couldn't get you in the tour anymore. I proposed alternatives that you didn't want. I apologized and directly refunded your money.

We had a really great day with Red Lava tours. I went back and forth trying to decide between a few tour groups and I'm happy we chose Red Lava. Eric our tour guide was wonderful. He really loves what he does and it shows in the way he approaches the tour. The waterfall was fantastic and not as cold as I expected from other reviews. Though the hike to it was quite challenging. My kids age 9,7,6 did it and my husband and I are 42/40 and completed it but was definitely sore and out of breath at times. The whole day tour is a long day for sure. The water fall tour is a few hours, lunch and then the volcano tour which was just fantastic. We had a clear day and the breezes were uplifting. We were exhausted at the end of the day and skipped the hot springs since we had at our hotel and these were similar. The guides were very accommodating and dropped us at the hotel on the way to the springs so we could rest our achy bones. It was truly a special day and soooo glad we didn't do it by ourselves. Highly recommend red lava !!!

The guides were very nice, professional, and knowledgeable. They were timely and organized. The day was amazing and worth every the price. The only thing I wish were different were the last stop at hot spring. It was not at a natural setting, but rather part of a hotel or more organized facility - I understand the natural hot springs are open to public and overcrowded, hence they want to give us a more private experience.

Saludos
