    Stop: 3 hours
We’ll meet at Pangas Beach Club in Tamarindo where there is parking, bathroom & shower facilities. Before setting out on a 35-minute kayak through lush mangroves I will brief you on the correct safety and paddling techniques. On reaching the heart of the Park we’ll leave the kayaks ashore to hike numerous trails, observing as much wildlife as possible; howler monkeys, exotic birds, parrots, herons, cranes, iguanas, squirrels and others. You will see exotic plants, like dragonfruit cactus, wild hibiscus, mushrooms and big trees such as the garden of the forest and the national guanacaste tree. We will visit and climb to the top of an archaeological site, built by the ancient indigenous people using rocks brought from nearby. Here we can see a stunning bird view of the tree canopy. This is a great place to observe the wildlife from above before returning to the kayaks for a refreshing drink and paddling back to Tamarindo. During our adventure I will guide you, explaining the animal behaviours and plant life we see. Due to daily tidal changes it is important we schedule the tour 60 – 90 mins before high tide.

We met Tom on Playa Tamarindo and decided to message him. He replied quickly on Whatsapp and it was easy to arrange the kayak tour of the estuary.

We had a great time. It was a private tour with just my partner and I, each having our own kayak, which was fun. We like kayaking so if you don't wish to do physical activity, I'd suggest you choose the boat option instead.

Tom was a good tour guide, having lots of knowledge about the local trees, plants and animals. We saw lots of birds and howler monkeys. No crocodiles seen on our trip but they can be quite elusive so not unexpected. We parked our kayaks and took a walking tour of the forest, seeing bats in a hollow tree, and cool plants thay fold when you touch them! Tom is very passionate about the flora and fauna of the place so that was lovely.

Tip: make sure you bring bug spray because mosquitos are relentless in the forest!

Tom was a fantastic guide. He arrived early which is always appreciated and then showed us exactly how to enter and exit the kayaks to avoid tipping over. After paddling through the estuary we arrived at a bank where we exited the kayaks and hiked through the woods before kayaking back to the estuary mouth.

He timed the trip with the tide to help us paddle easier, which was much appreciated. The whole trip he pointed out to us various birds and animals, even fish and spiders. His knowledge on the flora of the area is incredible and you can tell that he genuinely cares about what he does.

My wife and I are avid kayakers and try to kayak on every vacation we take as it allows us to explore our destination in a different way, and this trip didn’t disappoint. We would definitely do this trip again if/when we return.

We thought we would be kayaking up the estuary. However, upon arrival we were informed that this was not possible. Instead we got a boat tour up the estuary and a walk around in the jungle. It was probably just as well as the winds were high and we would have had a very difficult time getting to where the animals were plentiful by kayak.
Tom was very knowledgeable with regard to trees, plants, insects and some birds. It was pretty cool information.
The guy driving the boat was even better when it came to spotting wildlife. On our walk, he spotted howler monkeys in the trees. As we were boating back, he suddenly stopped and turned the boat around. He had spotted a crocodile in the mangroves. I have no idea how he saw it as were boating along at a pretty good clip. The crocodile blended in really well with the mangrove roots.

If you like your guide to be derisive and sarcastic, then he’s your guy (she says sarcastically). After haranguing us for not getting our phones out of the dry bags to take a photo of the crocodile, when we were just enjoying the moment, he purposefully (I believe) paddled close to it and flushed it, for our experience of seeing the croc move and swim, and as a result the next kayakers immediately after us missed seeing it at all. Then the other group pointed out a troupe of monkeys on the opposite side of the river after we’d gotten out on our side for the walk through the forest, and we hesitated to get back in and paddle over. Tom told us to go see them so we did — of course he was right, the monkeys were great to see up close, especially the babies— but for the remainder of the trip we were subject to repeated snarky comments about oh yeah, didn’t want to see the monkeys, aren’t monkeys boring and not worth seeing, etc etc. One couldn’t help comparing his style to the other group’s Costa Rica guide there with the monkeys, who was welcoming and encouraging and nice. And when Tom started telling us about the trees, and we chimed in among ourselves with questions and comments about the trees, he literally said, are you just going to talk to each other or are you going to listen to what I’m telling you? (Bear in mind this was a tour of just us three friends; there was no one else who we might be disturbing by verbalizing our thoughts.). Overall I feel like you can spend your money on this person, or on a guide who is positive, or at least not overtly insulting.

We met Tom on Tamarindo Beach and he gave me his card.
I prefer take a local tour so I wrote to him.
When I wrote to him I specified that I Wanna see crocodiles, specially our kid.
He proposed us to visit Las baulas in cayak and we booked it.
The day of the tour we arrived at the point of the meeting and Tom told us that he don't have kayak and we are doing the tour in boat, ok but I had prefer to knew it before, and we saw the price in another tour in boat less expensive that his price.
OK we were here so we did it.
But we saw nothing, except trees and few birds.
I know it's nature but if you sell something to see crocodiles go in place where the crocodiles is there.
We did tour with guide before this one and we saw lot of animals and the price was much better.
45 dollars and 20 dollars for kids ( because we asked discount at the end) is too much expensive to do just boat on the mangrove.
I didn't put 1 star because he was friendly but his tour is a trap of tourists like we said in French.

Friends
Tom (Luis) is an incredibly rude and unprofessional tour guide who not only failed to communicate the basic plan for the day, but proceeded to yell at us when we were having trouble navigating the kayak. When we got to the island, Tom yelled at us when we had to tend to our friend who got sick, telling us to just leave the tour. Throughout the rest of the tour, Tom would sporadically just stop and yell at us for either walking slowly, appreciating nature, or asking questions. We were nearly in tears by the end.
At the end of the tour, after Tom completely destroyed our day, he yelled at us to help him load the truck, and when we would make errors he would yell some more. I cannot overstate how miserable of a tour guide he is. Avoid at all costs.

This was a highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. It was too windy and the current much too strong to kayak, so we took a boat instead. It ended up being better that way. We started out early in the morning, which seemed to be the best time to go. We saw a wide variety of birds including Parrots, Osprey, Heron, and Hummingbirds. As we made our way into the mangroves, we saw a racoon family climbing through the trees. Right where we planned to leave the boat to hike, we were greeted by a big Crocodile! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna pointing out everything along the way. We ended up seeing monkeys on our hike through the forest and bats hiding in a hollowed out tree. There were even ancient Mayan burial grounds we got to climb up. The excursion really exceeded all of our expectations!

Luis was our guide and Victor piloted our boat - no kayaks for our adventure because of some mechanical issues with their truck, but they did not let that spoil the morning - ventured out promptly at 8a and were able to see a tiny of wildlife including howler monkeys and crocodiles. We did a little hiking as well to take in more of the NP from a different vantage point. Highly recommend this outfitter - thanks Luis & Victor!!!

It was quite windy during our stay in Costa Rica so we took a little motor boat out to the estuary. It’s really amazing such a wild and natural place exists right next to tamarindo! Tom (along with our boat driver) were such excellent guides! We spotted all sorts of birds cruising up the mangrove forests. Next we took a hike through the dry forests. We saw a family of howler monkeys which were amazing. Tom explained all about the local trees and plants and we learned so much! It was really a wonderful morning exploring nature. Definitely recommend!

If you like to be active when experiencing nature while learning about some of the plants, animals and history of the area, this is your tour! Tom has a special way of sharing his knowledge and obvious passion for Las Baulas National Park. We were lucky to experince this on a beautful day with calm water and monkeys climbing over us before the noisy boats scared them away. Tom communicates well through Whatsapp and even picked me up on his way. This is one you do not want to miss!
