Day 1: Underberg to Oxbow

Stop At: Sani Pass Border Control (Lesotho), Sani Pass, Mkhomazi Wilderness area, South Africa
We depart from Underberg at 8am and tackle the 4x4 drive up the legendary Sani Pass. Here we visit the resident traditional healer, observe a unique song & dance routine and a secret ceremonial dance. Interact and picnic lunch with the villagers. A true, once in a lifetime, cultural experience.

We then climb to the “Roof of Africa” past the Letsing Diamond Mine (world’s highest diamond mine), over the highest pass in Lesotho (Tlaeeng Pass, 3279m)(Africa’s highest motorable pass) and on to Oxbow Lodge. Overnight.

We then take a slow drive past numerous Basotho villages, through the town of Butha Buthe to a site that contains 3 species of dinosaur’s footprints, Massospondylus, Heterodontosaurus and Lesothosaurus ("lizard from Lesotho").

After a visit to the Leribe Craft Centre we make our way to the Ha Kome Cave Dwellings. This area was once home to cannibals and past generations of Basotho fled to the caves to hide from them.
