Tracie and Gianfranco bring stupendous observational skills, depth of knowledge, and delight to the evening. Tracie has a way of talking that lets you drop onto the nighttime world as she experiences it. With awe. Gianfranco has discovered a new species, can show some of the technical devices used to study various creatures, has lived there a long time, and just published a book.

We actually booked our time in Drake Bay largely because of this tour so suffice it to say our expectations were high - maybe even unfairly so. We had both Tracie and Gian on our tour for my family of five (two adults and three kids - 8, 6, and 6), which completely exceeded those expectations. You can't get a better duo than this. I could have talked to each of them for hours and listened to their stories and asked questions. I debated sneaking along behind them in a tour the next night (haha). You will learn that there are critters everywhere if you just know where to look. This was our fourth guided night tour in Costa Rica, and Tracie and Gian have it down to a science. One of them will be telling you a crazy interesting story about a bug or frog you're looking at while the other is walking down the path finding the next cool thing, so you aren't ever just searching (even though that would be fun, too). They both have such an immense respect for the creatures they work with but also no fear. Tracie offered to let my oldest son harvest some gold silk from a gold giant orb weaver - it was amazing. We saw bats, spiders, bugs, frogs, a scorpion, and a very rare caterpillar, and Tracie and Gian had so much interesting knowledge about each. If you can get into a tour with Tracie, don't hesitate to do it. And go, even if the weather doesn't seem like it's going to cooperate! Frogs like to come out in the rain.
Oh, and if you ask (you should because you won't remember everything you saw), they will send you a list of the creatures you saw on your tour!

Probably the Best and Most informative CR tour I’ve ever been on!!
Tracie and John compliment each throughout the tour taking time to not just show you but explain to you so much information about what your looking at!
Their delivery of the stories and facts about the Animals, Birds, Insects, reptiles, Amphibians and Spiders is simply incredible!!
If you have any background in biology, science,entomology etc etc. You will love this trip.
My favorites were the Scorpions and Snakes! AMAZING
YOU can tell the passion they both have for nature.
I learned So Much!!
Hopefully my wife will post pictures.

If you're a wildlife lover then do this tour!! Tracie and Gian are experts in their field and it showed on the tour. Their knowledge is exceptional and we learned loads about the species we saw on the night. I loved the fact that they worked as a team, Tracie would be giving an explanation about an animal whilst Gian spots another and vice versa!
If I'm ever back in Drake Bay then rest assured I will be doing this night tour again.

This tour is fantastic and I would say transformational ! I travel and have seen a lot and cannot remember anything like this. Tracie and Gian have phenomenal knowledge of entomology (on the level of scientists actively working in the field) and contagious passion including familiarity with individual personalities of the local creatures (seriously!). They are also well equipped and work in great tandem by simultaneously showing and explaining and looking for new interesting creatures which they can find in darkness with almost supernatural abilities (and then explain how it is done). In addition they keep notes and follow up with information about the specific findings and encounters in your specific tour. Also, great care about safety and good explanation of the rationale so we can behave better and be safer for ourselves and for the nature around us.

With Tracie, you get a tour that covers both: entertainment and scientific facts that really go into depth and address current research developments. This works because Tracie has a fascinating gift for storytelling and, as a trained entomologist, provides the scientific background. Gian, her husband, provides the supporting framework with equipment that makes even the most distant animal visible to all via telescope and tablet and his own enthusiasm for the natural sciences. The two are a well-rehearsed team and work together quite excellently. There is not a minute of boredom. The tour is suitable for young and old, for laymen and for amateur natural scientists. Even the most specific question will find an answer. And if not, then there are at least hints where one could research and still find something. A real gold piece among the tours offered in Drake that should not be missed in any case.

Tracie and Gian are an amazing biological informed power duo. Our 2.5 hr long night excursion with them was more valuable than five night hikes with other local guides (trust me, I've done them). With backgrounds in biology, their shared enthusiasm resonated all night between my partner and I. Because of a scheduling issue, I had to reschedule our hike with them, and they were incredibly accommodating to give us a private tour (even though I suspect it may have been their off day). Gian and Tracie have discovered many species for the first time in Costa Rica and are responsible for a lot of new discoveries in the Corcovado area. We even were fortunate enough to encounter two species which are relatively new (or rarely encountered) in the arachnid world (the trapdoor and huntsman spiders). It was truly a pleasure and treat to watch two biologists at the top of their fields working in tandem to give us the best animal viewing experience possible.
They have helped us see nature through a unique lens and improved our own animal sighting capabilities. Probably the best excursion we've had anywhere!

This was an absolute high point of a great week in Drake Bay. Tracie Stice (aka The Bug Lady) and Gianfranco Gómez are extremely knowledgeable and they present information in really interesting ways. The tour is fascinating, and also extremely fun. They use technology (high powered lens with an iPad) that allowed us to see details of things that were far away. But much of what we explored, we could see close up and photograph ourselves. Amazing to learn about brilliant adaptations and social structures of the creatures we encountered. We watched one spider that builds a nest in the ground with a sturdy trap door. Scorpions that glow when illuminated with UV light, bioluminescent lichen, cute (and some very large and not-so-cute) frogs, an opossum, and much more. They make the tour safe, it's a perfect length of time, and I truly can't imagine better guides for building an understanding of natural history and appreciation for the creatures we so often don't even notice.

Tracie and Gian lead an incredible tour. They are knowledgeable, kind, and answered all our questions with amazing stories. Truly a highlight of our time in Costa Rica, I highly recommend this tour to anyone curious about nighttime life.

We loved our time with Tracie so much we went twice. Each night we saw something different. Those uncomfortable with spiders will love it as there is lots of space and Tracie teaches you so much. Can't visit this part of Costa Rica without seeing Tracie.
