This is a great day out, IF you know what you’re getting into. I unfortunately miss read or got miss lead by the description.
This was our last stop in Costa Rica after visiting several national parks and seeing so much wild life we thought we were saving the best till last to see the ultimate animals and have a little bit of a wilder experience as it’s so cut off we were so excited. I picked this tour because it sounded a little less commercial and more walking which I liked the sound of to be able to see more animals.
However about 20 mins into the tour I realised this was more a intense hike than anything else. My boyfriend and I are relatively fit and healthy and hike a lot in the uk but as you can imagine the terrain is totally different there with a lot of slippy up and down muddy paths and in and out of rivers, boots on and off.
As I say if you know this is what you’re signing up for it’s a great day but if you think it’s going to be a walk in the park (literally) please don’t book, I feel like they should clearer on that. Even if there is wildlife there you’re so busy looking down to watch you don’t trip and your footing is right you wouldn’t see it.
That being said our guide was great and it was off the beaten track and we didn’t see another soul. He did give us a lot of information about the trees and the small amount of wildlife that we saw and took us to a gorgeous waterfall. He was kind and helpful which was so good.
So yes if you want a INTENSE FULL DAY HIKE then yes definitely recommend but if you just want to see the animals in the national park o suggest you choose another option.

Thank you for the great hiking adventure. Not quite an easy one but definitely worth it. Don't expect a safari trip, it's more a hike through the primary forest with the possibility of seeing animals and their tracks. The hiking "trails" are quite steep and muddy (when it rained the night before 😅) but that's what makes it a unique experience in Costa Rica, as all other "hikes" I did were more of a stroll through the forest. The guiding was great and we finished the best way possible with swimming in a waterfall pool in the middle of the jungle before we hit the last ascend.
10/10 would recommend, if you are fit an have fun hiking 😁

It was an exciting adventure that took up most of the day. We had Carlos as a guide who clearly lives for this experience. It was clear that his first priority was our safety but a close second was keeping us happy and engaged. The hike was long and at some points pretty exhausting but we took plenty of water breaks when necessary. The plant life was amazing and beautiful. We did not get to see much wild life but Carlos explained that the animals in the part we explored were wild, not used to humans, and are good at evading them due to expected predation. After a few hours of hiking We stopped to swim in the stream just below a gorgeous waterfall then headed to the beach for lunch which was provided and was simple but tasty. We ended the day with a couple more hours of hiking back to the pick up point but did not come back the way we came so we were able to see more of the landscape. The group we went with by the end felt like good friends and I was a bit sad to see everybody go. I would recommend this trip for my friends and family if you are up for a challenge and want to see nature in a way most people may never have the opportunity. I'm sure everyone's experience is very different but I couldn't see myself having a bad time if I did it again.

From my experience whether or not you'll enjoy this trip depends a huge amount on what you want to see/learn, your fitness and your Spanish skills.
If you are interested in botany, trees or traditional medicine/building techniques this might be the tour for you. The guide was certainly extremely knowledgeable in these areas.
If you want to see animals in my opinion this isn't the right tour. We only saw two people during the whole day. This means animals are less accustomed to humans and therefore aren't as visible. Also the extreme narrowness of the trail for much of the day means that if the guide does spot something, they can only point it out to those next to them. We saw 3 toucans and a small number of spider monkeys. The guide was also clearly more interested in botany and so stops for animal sightings were relatively short. If you want to see animals from my experience a Sirena Station trip was a better option.
Top Trails are very upfront that this trip requires a good level of fitness. This was reiterated multiple times. As someone who is active in a number of sports, I still struggled on the multiple near vertical climbs during the heat of the day. The trainee guide who stayed at the back of the line was excellent but I do feel extreme hilly terrain hiking fitness with heat/humidity acclimatisation is required. A generic good level of fitness isn't sufficient on my opinion. Also anyone with balance issues or vertigo/fear of heights may not enjoy it. I feel Top Trails would benefit from having a video of the tougher trail sections on their website so people can visually see the reality before committing - other tour operators in Drakes Bay have done this to great effect.
Finally, the guide did not speak much English. The translator wasn't from Costa Rica, didn't seem to understand many of the terms used and was providing summary translation at best much of the time. Multiple times the guide pointed something out or gave instructions and no translation was given. The group ended up continually asking for translation which isn't acceptable. Also, the reality of the narrowness of the paths, with ten people, meant those at the back couldn't always hear the guide or translator or see what the guide was speaking about. If you speak Spanish and make sure you're always at the front of the group then you won't have any issues.
For me this trip could be a 5* for the right person, but that person wasn't me and I feel Top Trails need to do more to ensure customers are clear what to expect given the cost of this tour. Another participant commented they'd paid a lot of money for basically a long hike so clearly others also didn't have the experience they anticipated.

I never really write reviews online but thought it was important to share this one so other people don’t waste their time and money too.
My partner and I went along to this tour and were greeted by a “guide” who gave us absolutely no introduction or talk at all before we began the hike. I would have at least liked to be given a heads up at how difficult most of the hike would be. His attitude to the whole day was very much “just another day at the office”
This tour was nothing but us following the guide like a GPS along a hike, which we could have quite easily done by ourselves for free. It was very uphill and steep and at many points had no paths, but was just flooded/mud/clay. Not to mention having to walk through a river that went up to my waistline, with no guidance whatsoever!
The guide was unwelcoming and never waited for people when he would stop to talk about something, which meant we learned nothing at all on this day. My partner and I (who are fit and healthy) were always behind due to the struggle of walking the slippery steep slopes, and no one waited. We felt completely excluded from the group for most of the time there.
Communication was very poor - we were told we would be picked up from our hotel at 6am but weren’t actually picked up until 7am. At the end of the day when we arrived back at the beach we started the day at, our guide never even told us what was happening next or that we weren’t getting picked up - he just walked off without even saying bye… so we were left on the beach in our soaking wet muddy clothes not knowing if we even had a lift back to our hotel. I don’t understand why you would be given a lift in the morning but not a lift home in the evening. If this was the case we would have just driven ourselves
What a disappointing day to say the least

Hello!
thanks for the comment.
At first, explain that we left at 7 am because there was a tropical storm and the sea was very rough, we waited an hour to analyze whether or not the tour would be done due to weather conditions. The tour includes transportation, in this case transportation by boat, we pick you up by taxi to the beach because other people's taxi was going there, the transportation included in the tour you chose is by car or by boat, in this case was by boat (this varies according to weather conditions) On the one hand, you say that you could do it alone, but then that you went through places without a path. ???
Mud is something that we cannot avoid, it is jungle and the rainy season is very strong. Welcome to the tropical rain forest The tour is adventure and you know it since you hire this tour. I'm sorry for your disappointment.
I can assure you that your guide Taylor, I try to do my best!

This hike definitely takes you off the beaten path. We didn’t pass any other groups in our 12 hour excursion through the jungle. Carlos has 10+ years of experience researching the wildlife in the area, and we could not ask for a better guide! He provided amazing insights about all of the flora and fauna we saw and was genuinely interested in making our experience unique and authentic. I recommend hiking shoes or boots, since the path can be a bit hilly/slippery with the mud. The lunch was homemade by Ticos in a remote hut halfway through the journey. I highly recommend this tour to experience the true beauty of the Costa Rica jungle!

Following all the good reviews on Trip Advisor, decided to choose this tour to visit Corcovado.
This is clearly a tourist trap, paying more than 100$ for a tour where we spent most of your time walking out of the park is a shame. Every animal we saw were the same hanging in the middle of Drake Village (mainly birds). To sum up, if you want to spend your money wisely, don't go for this tour!

Hi friends.
We are very sorry for not meeting your expectations.
Animals are unpredictable, especially in a place like San Pedrillo where they live with predators, it is a land of large predators because it is a 4000-year-old forest.
Many times it is difficult to meet the expectation of people who only go to look for animals.
The objective of our tour is to enjoy everything, primary and secondary forest, views, animals everything.
That is why we do not emphasize the view of animals because it is always difficult to meet people's expectations, however the animals are there, they are in their completely natural state and the best photos and videos we have of animals are there.
Thank you so much.

I am a nature lover who has seen it share of forests... The way Carlos took us into the Osa forest and shared his passion was beyond my expectations.
He shines an strong positive energy, has a great sense of humor, shares his knowledge and teaches deep respect for our environment.
I would certainly give a lot to be able to spend more time in the San Pedrillo area with him. I would have loved to spend the night and added the extra day, but time did not allow for it unfortunately. For me a good reason to go back one day and have Carlos show me the parts I missed.
Carlos will take you off the beaten path, where many other tourist groups follow their more standard visit.
I can advice anyone not to miss out on this experience, not just to see magical places only few others will, but for the chance to meet, learn and spend time with an extraordinary heartwarming person.

Me and my boyfriend were on a day-tour in Corcovado NP with Carlos in April 2021...and I can hardly add something to the former overwhelming reviews.
Although it it absolutely amazing to be aware of visiting a 3.000 years old primary rainforest, it is Carlos who makes this tour unforgettable special. His inspiring story goes together with an endless knowledge about every piece of nature you can imagine. We learned a lot, the stories made it easy to walk the 18 km - but you have to be aware that the third part of the trail requires some fitness as well as a passion for challenges ;) Carlos showed us various wildlife and I am absolutely sure we saw everything that was around (keep in mind that it is not a zoo! ;))

This was an amazing experience, with a highly knowledgeable guide. The information about the preparation was good, the pickup was smooth and then the tour itself was an unbelievably beautiful experience. I've seen very diverse trees and plants, which the guide told a lot of indigenous wisdom about. Als we saw multiple species of birds and monkeys. The hiking is beautiful, although it is kind of tough at times, so make sure you are in good shape to walk approx 20km through untouched rainforest. The cooling down at the waterfall was a nice break. Highly recommended with these people.

Hi,
we are two travelers that would love to do the hike tomorrow or after tomorrow, and we're wondering if enough people booked the hike on either days to be able to do it ?
Also, we are staying at Kinkajougalows at Rincon de San josecito, so I presume we can meet you on the beach near the hotel where they drop us off from the boat ride from Sierpe ? Thank you!

Hello. My husband and I will be visiting Costa Rica 26 February to 8 March 2022. We are staying at Lapa Rios on the other side of the Osa Peninsula from Drake Bay. Reading the reviews it sounds like a hike/tour with Carlos would be a good fit for us. Is it still possible to do a tour with you? Or is the location just too far away?
Hello,
I consider coming to Osa Peninsula in late November. Would it be OK to do this hike or is it still too rainy?
Thanks

How do we get to the pick up location from Uvita? Do you have an email address for communication?
I have a 6yr that has previously done hikes that are considered moderate for adults and did excellent. This looks like an amazing experience and I am wondering if this tour would be suitable for a more experience 6yr old? We’re planning to visit in early May 2021.

Salut!! C'est une visite qui se fait lentement et des personnes de différents âges peuvent le faire en plus d'être très divertissant en raison de la dynamique de la visite, vous passez une rivière, vous voyez des cascades de pkayas et de la bisque primaire
