    Chicago Chinatown
    Stop: 3 hours
Highlights of your tour include: Wentworth Avenue, the main artery of Chicago’s Chinatown district, and home to some of the most popular shopping and dining in the area. Cantonese cuisine comes from the southeastern region of Guangdong, formerly known as Canton. The Cantonese were some of the first Chinese to emigrate to the United States and their influence is seen in most American Chinese restaurants today. Dim sum is a traditional Cantonese appetizer, served in small bite-sized portions in steamer baskets. When paired with tea, dim sum makes for a complete Chinese brunch. Chinese tea, the other component of a dim sum brunch, is world-famous. China has been growing tea leaves for centuries and has a rich tradition of refined tea flavors. Portuguese-Chinese bakery treats come from the Portuguese Macau territory of China, and combine traditional and colonial flavors. Xi’an cuisine comes from the northwestern city of Xi’an, one of China’s ancient dynastic capitals. It is rare in the United States, a special delicacy in Chicago’s Chinatown. Lao Sze Chuan is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in the United States, opened by celebrity chef Tony Hu, who is lovingly regarded as the unofficial mayor of Chicago’s Chinatown. Sichuan chicken is made with famous Sichuan chili peppers, which are popular in dishes from every region of China. Chinatown Square is a two-story outdoor mall in the center of Chicago’s Chinatown, packed with popular shopping and dining. Mongolian hot pot centers on a large cauldron of broth placed in the center of the table. Once the broth comes to a boil guests dip thinly sliced meats and vegetables in the broth then pair with dipping sauce for a truly unique culinary experience.

We took the Chinatown Food and Walking Tour with York yesterday. It was fantastic way to spend an afternoon/evening! York educated us about different cuisines found in different parts of China. We went to five different restaurants and tried dim sum, Szechwan chicken with red peppers, a Chinese sandwich (which was interesting since I don't usually correlate bread and the cumin spice with China, but York explained the Xi'an region had a strong middle eastern influence due to the Silk Road access), noodles, and a Chinese dessert. The food was all really fantastic!

York also explained a lot about the Chinese immigration to the United States and their impact on the railroads, and some other interesting Chinese history regarding certain artwork and buildings during the tour. York did a fantastic job educating us, feeding us, and ensuring we were entertained with fascinating tidbits of Chinese history/culture and lots of "dad jokes" as we call them in my family (he had some ones that I am going to save, but I won't spoil the fun here)! He also was very cognizant of the different ages and fitness levels in our group. We had a woman who had some difficulty walking (perhaps due to a knee issue), and he made sure we never left anyone behind and noted all of the elevators whenever there were stairs involved.

I would highly recommend this tour to any locals wanting a taste of what Chinatown has to offer, or to anyone entertaining guests in the area. It was a great way to spend time learning and meeting new people.

Nick was our guide and he was training Robert. They were both great. We started with some Dim Sum with beer, then had some Szechuan spicey chicken with Plum wine, followed by some Xian cumin lamb with boba tea, then some beef w/noodles, and ended with a Portuguese/Chinese desert. Along the way, Nick and Robert were sharing their knowledge of the history of Chinese in America and how the origins and evolution of Chicago China Town.

This was my favorite tour on our trip! Our tour guide, York, was so knowledgeable! Not only does he go over the food, the region of cuisine, but we stopped at several landmarks around China Town to talk about the history.

Every restaurant had amazing food! Some restaurants were a little hot, but Chicago was going through a heat wave. We did this tour with our teen daughter and she loved it. We stayed in China town after the tour because there was so many stores we eyed along the way. You can spend a whole day in this area!

Teddy was absolutely wonderful. I love Chinese cuisine and have enjoyed much in the city of Chicago including amazing sushi in Printers Row area, but....the food choices at each of the five stops were unusual and not great. The garlic eggplant at the 1st stop was good but would have loved a meat option, not really a veggie lover, then the dumplings at the next stop were again good, but not great and the one wasn't cooked thru and I couldn't eat it, then we went to the 3rd stop and although they had pics of kabobs and rice & noodle dishes that looked amazing, we got a lamb sandwich (I would expect that on a Greek food tour, but didn't like it here), the sandwich wasn't hot or even warm and would make me not want to return to that restaurant at all, then we had a dessert stop which was a delicious custard type pie and the other items that I purchased there were awesome as well, then we finished at yummy, yummy and the beef noodle soup was delish, but I feel that should have been the 4th stop and ended with the dessert stop. there were so many incredible smelling restaurants that we walked past and I was waiting for more traditional type Chinese cuisine. I've been on 3 other Chicagoland food tours and this was the most disappointing and I went into it thinking it would be by far the best. I think you need to reconsider which restaurants are on the stops and maybe have some different food choices. Teddy made it really fun and interesting and the other people we were with were great too.

If only I could give a zero rating!

Paid extra for beverages and we weren’t able to get them as 2 of the tour stops were closed. I called their management and was told it be at least 30 days to get a partial refund! Unacceptable!

The foos stops we made weren’t even mediocre! Food was not good at all.

But most important and as disappointing is that I had to remind the tour guide about social distancing while we ate!

Don’t waste your money or time!

Oh no, we hate to hear this. As mentioned during our calls/emails, we are sorry that one of our restaurant partners unfortunately closed the day of your tour without notifying us prior to the tour. We were just as surprised and upset as you were. Strike that, you sound much more upset, but we were just as surprised. The restaurant has apologized for the issue. It was just the one restaurant, not two, as mentioned in your review. And our guide did notify us immediately and we made accommodations for more food at the other locations. Unfortunately, the pandemic has been hard on restaurants and the Chinese community was especially hit hard. While there have been road bumps as we move forward, we are proud to support Chinatown and the restaurants we visit. We have not heard too many complaints of the food choices before, but will of course monitor should this be an issue. Regarding the reimbursement, it took a bit longer to process because you booked through a third party and not through our discounted website. We encourage all to book direct with us. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience this caused you.

My wife and I did this as part of an anniversary weekend in Chicago. It was a ton of fun! It was a side of the city we had not experienced before. The food was very high quality, and it was the chance to try new things. Our particular tour guide grew up in Chinatown, which added an insider perspective and interesting culture tips. The next day we ended up visiting several of the restaurants again!

Our guide York really made the tour outstanding with his extensive firsthand knowledge of Chinese American history, cuisine, and culture. If you can take the Chinatown food tour this summer on Friday or Saturday, by all means seize the opportunity as I believe he said he is guiding all these tours. The food stops covered Dim sum/ Cantonese, Xian, and Szechuan and finished at the renowned Chinese bakery Chiu Quon. My son and I were both quite hungry starting the tour and left totally satisfied.

Nick J. was such a great and engaging guide. He made a point to learn all of our names and a bit about us. He was not only engaging but very knowledgeable about the history and significance of the food and the regions they come from. He kept us all moving along at a good pace - we never felt rushed OR like we lingered in any one place for too long. I would recommend this tour and Nick as a guide!

This tour was rich in food and history. York our guide took us back in time with beautiful details. I can see if one goes without a tour how these hidden gems wouldn’t be found. Lots of food so go hungry.
