I was surprised on a Thursday at 11:00 a.m. there was 23 on the tour. Ages varied from 9 to 90. It was informative and made me wonder why this information is not more commonly known in Springfield. The guide was personable and willing to answer questions. Stairs and only two times do you have the opportunity to sit during the tour. I am a local and this was my first time visiting. I would recommend if your relatives come to visit or you are looking for something different to do in Springfield. All four of us felt it was a pleasant surprise compared to our expectations. Ages 60 -90 and we are family even thought TripAdvisor thinks family must include young or teen children. Photos not allowed during the tour accept two locations.

Old photos, history, story of structure. Would like to have seen actual living quarters, bathroom facilities of early residents.

We had a blast walking through the castle! We enjoyed the history and our tour guide was wonderful! She did an excellent job of keeping us engaged! She was knowledgeable and very friendly! The castle is beautiful on the outside but we were a little confused why there was a Disney princess theme in the dining room. Btw, their cat scared us! Lol! I took a picture in the dining room , he is sitting in a chair under the table and his eyes were glowing! We got a scare and chuckle out of him! We really enjoyed the story of “Mr Boots” who likes to roam in the tunnel! Our 19 year old daughter loved carrying an EMF reader during the tour! She had a blast!!!

The history of the castle was very interesting. It would have been nice to see it more original, but I know the castle had been used for multiple things.
Our tour guide spoke a little too fast for my sister and I, as we are somewhat hard of hearing. Her knowledge of the castle tho was impeccable.
All in all it was a good tour. I would recommend it for others.

was alittle disappointed in this castle. pictures were not allowed to in most of the places and we couldnt hear most of what the tour guide said due to her mask. also make sure if you are vacanated that you have the card or they will make you wear your mask. it was a place that was ok to visit once and only once

Had some spare time to kill on a quick pass thru and chose this. It is a beautiful location and the history of it was interesting but....it was hard to hear our tour guide as she had on a mask and there was no microphone. Some places she took us to were explained well and some not. Obvious things in the room were not explained which was weird. This is mostly because some props there are for the night visits but she didn't explain that.

I enjoyed it but I didn't like the fact that she would not even mention things related to the ghost sightings - several people asked that question. She would only say she couldn't talk about Anything related to the night/ghost tour. We weren't asking for details, just if it was true. I think that's a huge missed opportunity because I would definitely have come back at night to pay more $$ for that tour if she'd just talk it up a little. She shut us all down when we asked - very weird.

Also - they ask for proof of vaccination @ the entry gate. Otherwise you have to wear a mask. Come prepared for a pic of your vax card.

The History Tour is not a family-friendly activity. The tour guide does a LOT of talking, sharing odd and unnecessary details as told from third-hand accounts. If you’re traveling with young children, don’t waste your time. My kids have been to and enjoyed dozens of museums and other historic sites, but they were utterly bored by this one. The details within the castle aren’t even enough to make up for the ridiculously dull tour; decor is a hodge-podge of eras. I’ve visited plenty of historic homes across the country (Mount Vernon, Arbor Lodge, Arlington House, Crescent Hotel, Adam’s Mansion, Joslyn Mansion, etc.) and without a doubt, this one is at the bottom of the list.

I took my kids on an afternoon tour in October. The castle was decorated for Halloween and they absolutely loved it. It was just us so the lady took her time and showed us around everything and told us the history and made friendly conversation. She was great with the kids as well and let them take pictures in the solitary confinement "room". Jump on the bouncy floor which was once used as a gym I believe. They got on the stage and pretended to sing with the Skelton band. It was a great time. They didn't just goof off, we did learn the history as well. We will be going back again when dad can come along and not have to work.

They're coping with COVID-19 pretty well. All in our group wore masks and they arranged so that we weren't crammed into small areas. The castle itself is fantastic with TONS of history. Overall, well worth the entry fee.
