Scarefest 2 day visit
Had a great time at Alton Towers for Scarefest 2021, enjoyed the scare mazes as it was our first time going (some were better than others... Altonville mine been the best one). Stayed in the enchanted village which was lovely. Breakfast was great. Watched some of the live entertainment which we really enjoyed. Got on most of the rides even though the queues were quite long. Still find the food and drink extortionate for what you actually get.... Only disappointments were The Smiler not been on and no scare zones or scare actors, other than that it was a fantastic 2 day visit

Had a great time but many many places that could easily be improved by the proper management team
Had a great day at alton towers however

We parked at car park J
We followed the signs as the monrail closed at 22:00
We was on wicker man at 22:15 due to the queue!!
We got lost as the signs to the car park disappeared so it took us 1 hour 20 mins walking round in the dark to find it!!! No one was around to ask and we had a 6 and 8 year old with us!!
Next complaint t is the pure greed they have and selling so many tickets that the shortest queue was 20 mins (for the bloody toilets)
Every ride was over 90 mins

The park isn’t very well signposted either
We really struggled to find our way round to start with

Roller coaster restaurant was soooooooo cool
Pricey….. £125+ for 4 people 2 kids meals inc but it is what it is and it was really nice so we would go back, just rather it be less than £100 for 4 people at a burger restaurant!

All in all we had a great time but there’s plenty of room for improvement

Avoid Half Term
Oct 2021 • Family
Went with teenage son on Tuesday 19 October, so just before most other schools broke-up. Had free park entrance tickets so decided to spend money on Fast-Track instead and so glad we did. Never fast-tracked before as disagree with the concept, but it’s a must if you don’t want to spend whole day queuing for 2 or 3 rides. I had thought that it may be slightly quieter due to most schools still being on term time, but nope: rammed!
Smiler closed all day; Congo closed all day; 13 closed on and off throughout the day; Rita closed until about 6pm.
Roller Coaster restaurant up near Gallactica is great: friendly staff; good food; and amazing food delivery (never seen or heard of that before!!).
Don’t go next week in half-term unless you’ve already got Fast-track tickets (they’ve already sold out).

Great Rides, Horrible Operations ...
Oct 2021
Took my teenage son and daughter to scarefest for my sons birthday this Friday, got into the park absolutely fine, I'd defiantly recommend arriving at 9 then aiming to get to the plaza just before 10, checked on the app, TH13TEEN and Rita were both said to be open, we got to Dark Forest and they were both closed, the app finally decided to update itself when we got there, anyway, we went to Gangsta Granny, it's a good family ride, we then walked over to Nemesis, defiantly the best ride in the park, only waited 5 minutes to ride. We then joined the 50 minute Galactica queue which we ended up waiting 90 minutes for because the operations were so poor, it was running 2 stations and 3 trains, but the trains were coming out incredibly slow, thankfully, the ride was very good. Then headed to Wickerman, pumping out the trains, waited an hour, but the queue was always moving, Wickerman is great, then got some lunch and had the choice to wait 80 minutes for Oblivion, and 120 minutes for Rita because TH13TEEN and The Smiler were closed (Smiler never opened all day) anyway, we chose to head to Rita, and I have never felt the urge to leave a queue in my entire life, but on this particular day, Rita's operations were the worst I have ever seen, they were sending trains every 2 and half minutes which considering there are only 20 people in a train, that's poor, at one point, there was a 10-15 minute window where nothing was happening, and we heard nothing about it, at this point, we're incredibly fed up, we chose to leave the queue because we just weren't moving, and we headed to 13 which just opened, waited around half an hour, but the queue was 120 minutes for those who just joined (fastrack queue was 45 minutes!) TH13TEEN was another example of poor operations, 13 also cannot operate in any form of rain what so ever, which is just absurd ... At this point, we were just fed up, we got off of 13 feeling slightly better, so we decided to take the skyride to Nemesis for a front row ride to end our day, we left at 6:30, wanted to stay till 9, but we just couldn't be bothered, the kids were happy with the rides we got on, but were incredibly disappointed we missed the likes of Rita, Oblivion and Smiler.

Overall, if your going to scarefest, prepare to queue, and I would recommend getting fastrack, I wouldn't come back to scarefest in the future unfortunately, and I really hope that Merlin reconsider some of their decisions this season, the guest experience should always be the priority, but all merlin seems to care about is money, prepare to not ride the smiler, and if your not getting fastrack, prepare to wait in some queues, I will definatly return to Alton Towers in the future, just not for scarefest

Disappointing
Oct 2021 • Family
As seems to be the theme with recent reviews, we were disappointed with Scarefest this year. Very busy (as to be expected) but multiple ride closures throughout the day, including smiler all day for an unknown reason and the river rapids due to “lack of water” added up to ridiculously long queues. At one point closed rides included nemesis, oblivion, 13, smiler, river rapids, hex and postman pat!!

Poor choice of food outlets as many seemed closed, pushing you towards the overpriced pop up stands on the grass area.

Overall cleanliness of the park was worse too, and almost every hand sanitisation station was empty.

You can no longer do the digital photo pass, which is a step backwards, but as we didn’t get on many rides, it turned out 4 photos was more than enough!

We stayed until the end as we always do, I think because people were that frustrated by the day a lot left early, queues got more reasonable after dark. However we were still crammed into the wickerman pre show, so far forward that we were behind the screen and couldn’t see it.

Staff were amazing and friendly as usual, but seemed like they magic was lost this year and replaced by money-making. We didn’t do the trick-o-treat street, £10 each for a paper bag with a few sweets seems a little like daylight robbery. There was a lack of theming around the park and some of the theming was not even switched on.

This is the 4th year of going to scarefest and has become a bit of a family tradition, but seriously considering a different plan for next year after our experience this time around, looking at reviews we are not the only ones to have this experience.

Good but should have been so much better
Oct 2021 • Family
Just completed a Friday day trip during scarefest. Day started off well with ok queues but quickly the park became crowded. With The Smiler still out of action the big rides soon had queues of over an hour each. Then more out of action. At one point 4 big rides closed. There seems to be only 1 tech team to fix the rides when they fail leading to very long down times which just increases the queues even more on the ones that are still running. The only rollercoaster that didn't close at some point was The Runaway Mine Train.
Enjoyed the last 2 hours in the dark as a lot of people had gone and the queues became reasonable.
Good points.
Staff are good. Rides are good when running. Nice doing rides in the dark.
Bad points.
Ride maintenance and time to fix faults was too long. Over an hour for a tech team just to arrive at 13 let alone fix it, as they were fixing Oblivion and / or Nemesis!
Poor food choice. Only 2 places to have a proper meal (Woodcutters and Pizza + Pasta buffet), which of course we're queuing out the door so only option is fast food.
If we had been one of those people who had to leave before 6pm it would have been an extremely disappointing and frustrating day out.

I love Alton Towers but recently it feels like Merlin are just trying to get as much money out of the public whilst spending as little as possible. Ride maintenance seems to be suffering here the same as Thorpe Park.

Dreadful
Aug 2021 • Family
I only gave 1 star because it wouldn’t allow me to give 0. Absolutely awful experience. My teen/ pre teen boys were so excited to come here but were really disappointed with the whole day. We only managed to get on 4 big rides & 1 small one all day and we stayed over so didn’t leave til 7pm. The queues were 3 hours long. We had to leave the smiler queue 2 hours into queing because our 12 year needed the toilet and clearly there would be another hour+ of queuing. Then when we got to the toilets there was more longggg queing. Just really disheartening. Everything was grubby, far too many people in the park, very overcrowded and run down. I won’t be going here ever again. When the kids got back to school, the youngest wrote a piece of work about his Trip , which was interesting to read as it was all about the queing and the things we did in the queue, such as eye spy….

A neglected and mismanaged park shows Alton Towers in sad decline
Oct 2021
I've been coming here regularly since a teen, and annually for Scarefest for years, and have had by far the worst experience here, or in any theme-park, today. They seem to be deliberately keeping rides closed presumably to save money (once you're in they've got you're cash), so crowds are funnelled into ever-longer queues. At one point more than half the major coasters were closed. I'd been so excited to bring my brother and his girlfriend here for their first time and felt embarrassed and upset to have given them such a miserable experience, apologising to them all day about how Alton Towers wasn't normally this bad. In addition, lots of the theming and ride-hyping screens/displays/music has been removed, making the queues even more tedious and the whole place feel more hollow.

2.5 hours queue for one old ride (90 mins on board walking in) kind of killed the day for us; you expect to queue a bit (an hour, maybe 90 mins for one of the newer ones) but this was totally disproportionate for a weekday in October, and simply happened because most adult visitors were stuck queueing for only 3 open thrill-seeker roller-coasters at that point.

Arrived at opening - immediately going to Smiler told by staff there it was closed and wouldn't be running all day. Move on to Thirteen - also closed, no staff to ask about opening, no test cars running on either for hours whilst queuing for adjacent rides hence suspect a deliberate choice to keep closed. River Rapids - closed, currents not even running. Nemesis - broke down just 10 mins after we got off. And on and on...

My poor friends were so bummed out that we left early, never getting to do half of the big rollercoasters as queue times were 2 hours for those still running (and some remained closed all day). If we'd been having queue times up to an hour per ride average we'd have stayed all day, spent lots on food etc. but we were so fed up that we felt Merlin had taken advantage of us enough and just called it quits.

Alton Towers - you used to be amazing, and the staff on the ground still are. You can't just blame this poor performance on covid-19 (also, no hand-sanitizer in the 10 or so pumps I tried through the day). Deliberately keeping some rides closed leaves you with no capacity to redirect visitors elsewhere when technical difficulties inevitably shut one down for an hour or two. If you can't maintain your park and deliver even mediocre performance you'll lose loyal visitors.
