Overview
Explore Old Charleston Jail, one of the city’s paranormal hot spots, during this guided night tour that takes you back through its history from 1802 to 1939. Hear tales from your guide about the ghosts that allegedly haunt its halls. Prebooking means you can visit on the day and time you’d like, and it’s easy to fit into your busy schedule.
Highlights
  • Explore the Old Charleston Jail at night—one of the only night tours offered
  • Get the historical rundown starting at the day the jail was built in 1802
  • Hear about ghosts that supposedly haunt the halls from your guide
  • Choose from multiple tour times to best fit your schedule
What to Expect
Meet for this guided tour at the Old Charleston City Jail, and get ready to explore its haunted jail cells. Since it will be nighttime, prepare to get even more spooked. As you walk the hallways, your guide will tell you all about the city’s most famous criminals who lived and died there. You’ll enter the actual cells that held notorious prisoners, such as Lavinia and John Fisher. See if you can catch sight of Lavinia’s ghost, who has been said to still haunt the halls. Some tourgoers have claimed they’ve seen objects move on their own. Your tour ends back at the entrance of the prison with plenty of time to go out afterward to recover from your eerie adventure.

I originally thought this was a walking tour through the city, but really it's just the old jail. Also, we originally booked with the last slot, 10pm, but were asked if we could combine with the 9pm group. We did, but in hindsight, I wish they would have left our original spot.

This is a fantastic tour - you really should go at night, too. Wear sensible shoes and clothes though - as you will go up and down stairs in low-lighting. It is a crazy history of the jail and its past (and present?) occupants with a good delivery and knowledgeable guides.

Great history, Randy was our guide and is a great historian of this site and Charleston in general. Disappointed to hear they are trying to renovate this site as office space though. Randy told us some great spooky stories of the jail and it's history! I would totally recommend

We took this tour on Sunday, March 8th, 2020. This was a fun tour while we were in Charleston. It wasn't really "scary," however, I might call it spooky. There were never any times where I felt unsafe or anything, but you are in a very dark 200-year-old jail, so it was eerie.

Thanks so much for your review of the Haunted Jail Tour! The place is undoubtedly spooky but where a lot of the horror comes from is the suffering that took place within its walls. Our guides do their best to paint the image of what the Jail was like when it was operation as well as the telling of the events that lead us to believe that some of the former inmates continue to haunt the building. Thanks again for visiting the Old City Jail with us!

Loved the structure and jail itself. Our tour guide talked waaaaay too much and we only saw like 3 rooms. They tried to pretend it was creepy but mostly it was just dark so bring a flashlight for walking stairs and such!
