Overview

The Italian Market is one of Philadelphia’s top neighborhoods for food lovers, and on this in-depth, chef-led tour, you won’t just meet local vendors and learn about its history: you’ll get to sample everything from artisanal cheeses to just-made Mexican tortillas. An optional VIP upgrade, including a traditional Italian meal and behind-the-scenes tour with a local meatball and gravy chef, is also available.

What to Expect

Begin your tour when you meet your guide at the Italian Market Visitor’s Center.

Located just south of Center City, the Italian Market has been one of Philadelphia’s key culinary destinations for generations. Your first stop includes a coffee and sweet treat, which you can enjoy while learning about the history of this vibrant area. Hear about the neighborhood’s key delicacies from your guide—who doubles as a chef—and meet some of the market’s longstanding vendors.

Next, visit DiBruno Bros (arguably the city’s best-known cheese shop) and enjoy a number of samples. Then, you’ll snack on freshly made Mexican tortillas, classic South Philadelphia-style pizza, and finally sample cannoli made at a 100-year-old bakery.

You can also upgrade to an optional VIP tour, which includes a behind-the-scenes neighborhood outing with a local chef who specializes in meatballs and gravy, a 10% discount at participating vendors, and an Italian meal. Gluten-free and vegetarian tour itineraries are also available.

Informative, Fun and Food!

We had a great time with Jacquie. We visited many places in the Italian Market area and tried many different cheese, olives, oils and so much more. She is so knowledgeable and professional. My daughter and I had the best time and would recommend highly.
