Isabell is super! Her tours are great! She may be a little more expensive, but the old saying, “You get what you pay for!” is true!

Rene was our driver and guide. He was excellent! Felt like I had known him all my life! He is full of great information from history to what to eat and where to eat it!

I recommend booking a tour near the beginning of your visit to take advantage of some of his recommendations. Can’t go wrong with his recommendations!

The Whitney Plantation is a must! It would be better to go when it’s not blazing hot! It is mostly outside. They do have a museum. However, we did not really get to visit it. I would recommend additional time added to the tour to be able to view the museum.

The St. Joseph Plantation was my least favorite of all the plantations I visited. It was okay, but not great. It seemed to be a hodgepodge of rooms. Rooms were dedicated to more themes, not necessarily true to the plantation or any particular time period. For example, the dining room is not located in the correct room. I think it would be better if they would pick a theme or time period and go with it.

We had a fabulous experience with Isabelle at Tour by Isabelle! Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Ida, St. Joseph Plantation was not open to the public so we were able to tour Destrehan Plantation instead. Pickup at our hotel was prompt, and we loved the small group attribute. Our tour began with a 30-minute drive, where Isabelle shared all sorts of knowledge about New Orleans and LA including hurricane impact, agriculture, wild life, city drainage, etc. We arrived at Destrehan first, where we had a guided tour from the Plantation, followed by a personal tour of the grounds by Isabelle as well as time to spend in the many exhibits. From there, we made our way to Whitney plantation, where we had a wonderful audio tour and then time to spend in the exhibit hall as well. Since we were ahead of schedule, we also had the opportunity to drive by several of the other plantations in the area like Oak Alley, Laura Plantation, and St. Joseph.

I am so happy we booked this tour and will definitely by using Tours by Isabelle for future trips! My only complaint was we had several outsiders join our "Isabelle-portion" tour at Destrehan and at $128 pp, they should have been shooed away, especially since they kept crowding towards the front.

Overall, great experience and highly recommended!!!

Whitney plantation is a must for all who want to learn about plantation life from the enslaved viewpoint. I believe it is the only one in the U.S. to do this. Combined with St. Joseph plantation where descendents have restored the house and still raise sugar cane, this makes a good Louisana history experience. I have visited plantations in South Carolina, but crops, culture, and history are different here. Steve our informative guide and safe driver was great. New Orleans was my grandson's choice for his 15th birthday trip a year late. One reason was the interesting history of the city and surrounding area. Without a car, I explored various tour options to get to the plantations. We wanted one that included Whitney.
Isabel responded to my inquires right away and was able to book us on the day we wished to go. There were two others on our small group tour. I compared tours, prices, and reviews and decided Tours by Isabel, a locally owned business, was for us. Whitney is not part of all companies and many only schedule city tours tours during the summer months.

The entire tour was very absorbing, informative and well-managed. Gisele, the tour guide from Isabelle's Tours, was charming, knowledgeable and organized, and I found her personal anecdotes both relevant and revealing. I highly recommend this tour if you are looking for meaningful insight/understanding of authentic plantation life. St. Joseph provided a clear sense of the white experience of plantation existence (not “Gone with the Wind”) while Whitney focused on the plantation life from the enslaved perspective. Both plantations were absorbing, especially Whitney, where the extensive effort to properly document experiences was obvious. Anyone interested in the real history of the plantation era in the south should absolutely take this tour.

It was a day to remember. Our Driver/Guide, Rene, picked us up on time. Not only was he a good driver but also an excellent guide who talked clearly, not too fast (I am a foreigner), answer all our questions related to History, Sugar Cane production, life on the plantations in the 1700, 1800 and today besides being entertaining. The different places where amazing and the tour very interesting. Our van with 12 people was comfortable and very relax.
So sorry we couldn't plan another tour during our stay in New Orleans but we will certainly book again with "Tours by Isabelle" when we are coming back. I highly recommended them as they are also very customer oriented and make sure you understand and feel relax.
Thank you Isabelle and Rene.

Isabelle had excellent communication with us before and after the tour. She provided golf umbrellas for our family of 5. Our tour guide Steve was quite knowledgeable and personable! He peaked our interest so much that even our teenage sons were asking questions. I loved the small group experience. Definitely the best tour I have ever experienced.

Our entire tour was so well planned. The two Plantations gave a full picture of the plantation era through the eyes of family members and their histories at the Plantation as well as the powerful personal accounts of slaves. Our tour guide Renee was a wealth of knowledge and presented New Orleans and a fun and informative way. We highly recommend Tours by Isabelle and would plan to go on another trip.

This tour is a must!! I highly recommend Isabelle’s Tours. From pick up to drop off, John was amazing and a great story teller. The Whitney Plantation is deep in history and it’s an amazing way to pay homage to our ancestors by diving deep into a glimpse of what life was like. St. Joseph’s plantation gave another interesting perspective and the historian provided rich context from “the big house” angle. Definitely add this to your schedule.

I did the tour today and was happy with the resulting excursion. Both plantations were interesting in their own way, and Whitney focuses almost exclusively on the enslaved population and their perspectives, unlike most other plantations. Our tour guide, Gisele, had a relativey unique and interesting personality and provided a good amount of fascinating information.
