Friends were visiting from TX and wanted to see Newport. Expected weather was rainy ALL day, windy and cold. I was searching on Trip Advisor of places and things to do in Newport when I saw a review and the option for a tour audio app. For the small price, I just thought, "I got nothing to lose". I connected the phone to the car bluetooth, so 4 adults and 2 tweens inside the van were able to enjoy a magnificent tour against the rain. The narrator voice was very clear and the stories were very interesting. We followed the mapped route and heard the info as we explore the area. It took us full 2 hours going at the speed limit and enjoying the views as we could. This is an awesome feature and definitely will be searching more tours available on this app for our future travel journeys. Highly recommend!

We were traveling with a one year old and the weather was rainy, windy and cold. I was so happy when searching on Trip Advisor for the Gilded Age tours that there was an option for a downloadable audio app that provided a tour of the many “cottages” in Newport, RI. The narrator was very good and provided interesting history of the area, construction of the homes and the families that owned them. We stayed in our car and drove to the different mansions, as we followed the mapped route and heard the info for that site. A couple of time we took a wrong turn (our fault) but were able to right it easily.

Overall, the commentary and directions were spot on, even in busy traffic locations. One spot seemed to be off/wrong? It had us going down a dead end street toward the cliff walks, but it was so crowed, dozens of cars ended up doing 3 point turns (turning around) at the end and going back to the main street.. maybe mention it is a dead end, and if busy, do not go down! (took 15 min to get out!) Also agree, it would be very hard for a solo driver to do this. Looking at the app, making last minute choices (a few options), and trying also look at houses on a very busy street would be tough. It was worth it for the others in the car, so 4 stars.

Very interesting commentary about the history of Newport and its mansion owners. Timing with narration was very well orchestrated as we drove along the route. Will definitely try this app in other cities also. Reasonable price!

This is a great way to experience on your own! We wanted to check out all the mansions and sites but didn’t want the big tour group, so we downloaded the app and off we went! The guide explains along the way, with the google/gps map, and you can pause or go back if you need to hear them tell the story/history one more time, lol. It was great; definitely recommend and will look for another tour in another city!

A nice, convenient audio tour that we could do on our own and give our weekend company a nice overview of Newport. As you follow the route, the app's GPS picks up where you are and plays the corresponding script for the attraction you are passing. With the foliage now grown in, some views are obstructed but it is still a nice activity and you can't beat the value!

Outstanding!!!! We stayed at the Hydrangea House Inn which was simply wonderful. Ate lunch at Picnic which is next door and also had lunch at the Black Pearl (amazing chowder). Dinners were at the Boru Noodle Bar on Friday night and then on Saturday we dressed up for Bouchard Restaurant (soufflé was outstanding). Did a self drive tour via an audio app you download. Also toured Marble House and walked half of Cliff Walk.

Not rating the tour, as I never was able to access it. Trying to get it to start required downloading three (!!!) new apps, each requiring a user name and password, and each formatted differently. Try doing that while navigating busy traffic with no parking availability, and you have a perfect recipe for frustration.

The route was easy to follow and the app was very user-friendly. Just be sure to download it ahead of time. It offered lots of wonderful information with a couple of optional add-ons if you wanted more history on a particular subject or location

Usually that tour is available 24/7. Please make sure you are choosing the SELF-DRIVING AUDIO TOUR. Unless the city is closed for some reason, it should be on.

The Newport Cliff Walk is great for all ages, 4 to 94! Most of it is paved. There’s a section that’s rocky which should be avoided by anyone with unsure footing. This self-guided tour gives you the option to start/stop anytime.

What is the best time to visit Newport?
Newport is scenic any time of the year! The summer and fall are the most popular seasons. The spring features beautiful blooming flowers and the winter has wonderful holiday decorations (but often reduced visiting hours at the mansions).

We are four and planning to take a Newport Self-Drive tour. How should we download the app if we buy only one tour?
Once you book, you’ll get two things from us: a text message sent within minutes and an email sent in less than 30min. Both contain the link for our tour guide app, Action Tour Guide. They’ll also contain your unique password. Enter the password into the app and you’ll have the tour!
If all of your plan to drive in one car, just book one tour. It’s per car, not per person.
Also, the date you choose doesn’t matter. You’ll have access to the tour from the moment you book until forever (no expiry). So you don’t have to worry if you selected the wrong date or if your travel plans changed.
Trip Advisor states "Purchase one tour per car, not per person. Everyone listens together!". How do I do this?
Although TripAdvisor asks you to book per person, just enter 1 in that category instead. That way you’ll get a single self-guided tour which everyone in the car can listen in on together!

When booking the tour, TripAdvisor will ask you how many travelers are in the group. Just put 1 in that category.
What time starts?
Since this is a self-guided tour, you can start/end at any time! Once you book, you’ll get access to the tour via our app. From that point on, you can take the tour at any time, start and stop as desired, re-take it the next day if needed, etc.

I've read that the visitors center is permanently closed. Where is the starting point of this tour if it is still in existence. We plan on visiting for a long weekend 11/5-8/20
Yes, the Discover Newport Visitor Center is closed. For now, the tour still begins from just outside the Discover Newport building — you can pause on America’s Cup Ave or in the parking lot to listen to the Welcome Stop. From there, the tour continues down America’s Cup Ave until it hits Bellevue Ave.

Once downloaded, the tour stays on the phone more than 20 days. You can take the tour as many times or whenever you want in these 20 days. You can also break your tours into multiple days. Hope the above helps
