Ditchling is no ordinary village; it has been home to some of Britain's most innovative artists and has a legacy of international importance.

Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft is an independent charity dedicated to the display and preservation of art and craft produced by artists associated with the village of Ditchling.

The museum celebrates the important artistic heritage of the village which was home to many artists including Frank Brangwyn, Eric Gill, Charles Knight, David Jones, Edward Johnston, Ethel Mairet and many others.

Following a major redevelopment in 2013, the museum is now an award-winning attraction with regularly changing exhibitions, a dedicated learning space and new facilities including a shop and cafe in a restored 18th century Cart Lodge.

Charming village on the South Downs way. Unexpectedly elegant new crafts museum/gallery. Inspiring for font lovers; tells important chapter in 20th century British art. Brill shop. Good kids activities kept them busy. I'd go rain or shine. Well worth the admission price. Have been 3x in last year alone.

Loved this small museum. very interesting and Some classic UK work of letters for London Transport, and artists such as Eric Gill. It also has a lovely small shop and café. I love to visit this museum again

Considering the size of the museum it is expensive. The cafe is also expensive too. Not recommended.

Hello there, sorry to hear you found our admission fees too high, but do hope you enjoyed the contents, spirit and atmosphere of the museum despite this. We are an independent charity that does not receive government or local authority funding, so we rely on our admission fees and the goodwill of our visitors to keep the museum going. The... More

How wonderful to discover in a remote Sussex village that the London tube typeface was invented by a local and that this village is the printing Mecca with still famous illustrators residing there! And the coffee shop also caters lovely cakes and brilliant expresso coffee!

Try to catch the talk given about the museum. You will enjoy your visit even more. Very good exhibition - some rarely seen sculptures of the best creative people.

Absolutely beautiful building in a beautiful setting- however the museum presupposes that you have done your homework first and is annoying sparse on the details of the artists it showcases. I wanted more details about this hub of artistic endeavour , how did they live daily , what happened to the people after life in Ditchling. Wikipedia gave me more... More

We stopped at Ditchling on our way back to London. The village is charming and the Museum is one of the high spots. It looks at the development of typography especially relating to London Transport and looks at ways in which printing developed. It also had work by a number of important local artists and craftspeople. The museum is quite... More

This museum is a sheer delight the displays are well laid out with very good explanations for all the exhibits. We had no idea that Ditchling had played such an important part of the Arts and Crafts movement until we visited the museum. The refurbished buildings and extension to the museum are an inspiration and a compliment to the exhibits.... More

We went specifically to see an exhibition on the London Underground typeface designer and were not disappointed. There was a very informative, short, introductory talk about the museum, the people exhibited and the variety of artefacts they have. There is something there for all ages to enjoy, also the well equipped shop has beautiful things for sale at all prices.... More

The museum itself is really interesting. The shop is good and the food is nice. I volunteered here for ages, did lots for the museum and had no thanks. I would have volunteered for them again but as they did not reply, to any contact afterwards, I am thoroughly disappointed. Because of this I would not choose to support the... More

Hi Amy, glad to hear that you still find the museum itself interesting, but so sorry to hear that your experience here as a volunteer has detracted from your public review and future support - we are always incredibly grateful to (and in awe of) all our volunteers who donate their time and passion. The museum as an organisation has... More
