About
SINHARAJA RAIN FOREST is a world heritage and bio diversity hotspot which is also a major eco tourism destination in Sri Lanka. It is one of the few virgin forests left in the world. This evergreen rain forest, a UNESCO World heritage site, is one of the few virgin rain forests left to date. Damp mysterious and teeming with life, the Sinharaja forest reserve situated 120 KM South East of Colombo, is the last expensive stretch of virgin rainforest on the island. At just over 11000 hectares, line across the wet zone the Southern edge of the hill country, Sinharaja is an ecological treasure trove. It is staggering array of flora and fauna place it among the top bio diversity hotspot in the world. Sinharaja Forest Reserve - A UNESCO world heritage site - encompasses the largest single swath of remaining low land tropical rain forest in the country. Over 130 birds, species are found here including many of the 33 species endemic to the Sri Lanka. There also rich reptile population and myriads of insects species, many yet to be classified. Mammals scenes here including the purple faced langur monkey and the giant squirrel. Sinharaja is also home to the elusive leopard. It is preferable to explore Sinharaja on foot, which makes for the truly authentic jungle experience. Best starting point for visits are Deniyaya Mederipitiya to the East or Kudawa to the North.

- JoJoLuton, United Kingdom1,005 contributionsPart of a tour from Ecolodge hotelWe came as part of Mercury holidays tour group staying in the Rainforest Ecolodge hotel. We went out three times on different tours- first one was 6:30 pm for the night tour, 6:30am early morning birds watching 10:30 trekking though the forest. All were expertly guided , leech socks provided ( recommended long trousers etc) We actually were lucky as it hadn’t rained for 2 weeks so almost no leeches, if it’s raining/ rained they are quite numerous- the guides are good at checking and advising. Quite how he found the tiny frogs and lizards is beyond me! We thoroughly enjoyed our treks.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024

The service from our initial enquiry until the end of the trip was seamless and all our questions were answered promptly. Based on our level of fitness and interests, Tilanka customized the tour to meet our requirements and was very flexible. He is an avid birder and his knowledge and experience in identifying the various species and taking the time and patience to seek the most elusive birds made it an incredible experience. He went above and beyond to find as many species especially the endemics in Sinharaja and surrounding area. We were very impressed with his commitment to environmental protection. He is a professional guide whose experience is not limited only to birding, but with in-depth knowledge on the culture, history, food and overall information which he is passionate and proud to share. We had an incredible 2 days experience with Tilanka. He was punctual, courteous, provided exceptional customer service and we were able to relax and enjoy our trip. We would not hesitate to recommend Tilanka, Whatsapp +94702372945 for a tour of Sri Lanka.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2024

We had a very professionell nice guide, who discovered for us a lot of plants and animals: monkeys, waran, snake, spiders, chameleons, an owl... - Lanil MarasingheColombo, Sri Lanka372 contributionsA real rainforest experienceThere are several entrances to the forest, each offering different experiences. Choose one based on what you want to see, like the Lankagama Entrance for waterfalls or Deniyaya for nearby hotels. A guide is recommended. The weather is usually rainy, so come prepared. Overall, a great experience with nature, water streams, and endemic wildlife.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 November 2024

From the bottom of the street you have to walk up a (short) distance, but then you end up in a nice piece of peace, where you can enjoy nature and tranquility. Upon reception, staff super friendly and can cook like the best. After our lunch escorted to the room..also this was a small climb up. Room is spacious with an attached bathroom with a good shower and hot water. On the balcony a sunbed and hammock where you can enjoy the peace and the view. Next day we were picked up by a guide for a full day in the rainforest. Packed lunch was neatly provided. Tired and satisfied we came back where again a delicious dinner was waiting for us. This place we would not have missed!Visited January 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2025

A hike in the Sinharaja forest is clearly worth the detour for anyone interested in nature, because the humid tropical environment is very different, in the scenery and in the fauna present, than most of the rest of the natural sites of the country (more in dry forest). In addition, it is an area still preserved from mass tourism.
I very strongly encourage you to accompany the guide Hemal, an extremely passionate and exciting young man whose language barrier was not a problem. He will be able to share with you his extensive knowledge about the forest and its inhabitants whom he knows by heart, with great kindness and availability, adapting to your pace and being very attentive, particularly in repelling the numerous leeches. We did a day hike as well as a night hike right next to the reserve and it was a real pleasure each time.
Reptiles and amphibians enthusiasts will be delighted at Sinharaja but you can also observe birds, primates, invertebrates, etc.
A big thank you to Hemal for this discovery which we highly recommend.

We booked a tour guide via booking.com. It was worth it as he was very knowledgeable about nature and animals and knew the rainforest well. It was very beautiful and we got to swim in a water fall. Didn’t see as many animals as we had hoped though and it was quite a long walk.

This trip I entered from the northern Kalawana side, only 3hrs from Colombo.
I stayed at Jansens (recommended) where it's a short drive to the ticket office / entrance of Sinharajah. Jansens offers early breakfast and package lunch pack if you need.
Get to the park entrance at 7am when they open for the early morning walk. You *MUST* wear leech socks as the rain forest is filled with them - go to a Alpine camping store in Colombo for 1500rupees, or I think you can even rent them from the ticket office.
Note the hike is 4-6hrs. I walked every path available and it was 6hrs, but that included some side trips. Unfortunately the long hike to Singhagala of 10hrs has been closed since Covid, which is what i had planned for.
Price is reasonable at 1200rupees for a foreigner plus 2500 for a guide. Excellent rainforest for hiking, birdwatching, and just enjoying the great outdoors.

Lovely slice of nature...choice of pathways varying in length and difficulty. Beautiful walk through wet and wild environment.
It is mandatory to hire a guide...no entrance without one (which seems excessive as the easy route is well paved and seems very safe).
Guide was knowledgeable and pointed out plants and animals that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.
It was recommended we were walking/sensible shoes but no-one said we should be covered up. My son and I both had multiple leeches attach to our legs (prior warning would have been nice...I would have covered my legs/feet).

I enjoyed two good walks in this forest reserve, where everyone has to walk (except a few locals on motorbikes, But you hardly see them), and all the visitors go with the guide. The guide is very good and helpful and new the animals birds and plants and their Latin names. More paths would be nice.

This is a very big rain forest and in a single tour we can see only a very small area. We stayed in Rainforest Eco Lodge and took the tour from there. There were many leaches but hotel provided us leach socks. Even the small kids around 4 -8 years old joined with us and they too enjoyed the tour.

Stunning forest buzzing with mammals, reptiles, insects and birds. I saw the following: Spot winged thrush, Chestnut backed owlet, Giant wood spider, Kangaroo lizard, Green pit viper, Brown fish owl, Sri Lankan frogmouth, Purple face leaf langur,
Crimson backed flameback, Green vine snake, Giant squirrel, Hump nose lizard, Jungle fowl. The guide was excellent and managed to spot the tiniest detail. I did the half day tour but this only covers a small part of the forest, it's pretty large. I still managed to get to a waterfall for a swim, which was really nice. I was terrified of leeches, but I only saw a tiny one which had no success getting past the sole of my shoe. The guide covered my shoes and socks with salt which probably helped.

Well Maintained Rain Forest Reserve. It's possible to see snakes, lizards and more different reptiles. Hight trees and a lot of waterfalls. Better to use guide service. Different options available. Keep in Mind, that you have to take tracking boots, it's a must have. Don't pick long root if you're not like long trips, it's really exhausting.

We have been twice to Sinharaja now and we are so looking forward to going back.
I can not give you any technical details about the place, (but i see that the person who wrote the previews review did a great job) but i can tell you what its like for an outsider to visit this place.
We drove to Sinharaja early morning, after driving through some beautiful hills full of tea plantations, we arrived at the entrance. The entrance fee to the forest is around 600Rupees per person and we had our video camera with us so we had to pay an extra fee for it, but trust me, its totally worth it. it all came down to around 10 euros for the both of us plus the cost of the guide.
Let me start by saying that the best time to visit this place is from January to April, when its dry season so there is no rain.
The first time we went to Sinharaja it was May 2008, and it was rainy season so there was the huge problem of Leeches, which we had heavily underestimated and we just went there in our shorts and sandals. From the moment we went in to the forest, every ten minutes we would be wiping off Leeches from our legs and cleaning the blood, you have to know that when leeches start sucking your blood you dont feel a thing, when they stop thats when the blood starts to flow and you realize that you have been bitten. its really scary but fortunately u dont catch anything from them. u just bleed for a few minutes thats all.
This time we went it was dry season so there werent so many leeches, but we went prepared anyways, rubber boots and track pants so there were a couple of desperate leeches who were looking for a way to get in the boots. But anyways, always go prepared.
The guides that accompany you are really great. they speak english and they will tell you everything you want to know and the names of every single animal and insect, and even the names of every single tree.
We saw so many beautiful butterflies that were so huge that at first we thought they were birds.
We also saw lots of beautiful birds, many of these you find only in Srilanka. and many different species of Lizards, some very rare Animals as well, like the Frog Mouth Owl which was so amazing to see. lots of snakes, water snakes and if you are lucky, you may see some wild cats.
If you are a Nature lover, or if you love hiking or u just love watching those documentries about rainforests and always wanted to visit one, well this is the place for you.

Avoid this company like the plague. In May 2013 I booked two nights in tents in Sinharaja for my family (including two teenage boys). It was to be our Christmas and Boxing Day treat and at over $2000 for two nights, by far the most expensive element of a two week trip. To put the price into a Sri Lankan context, it cost more per night than renting the luxurious entirety of Taprobane Private Island (five double bedrooms and a private staff). As a family we have done similar 'birding' trips in Africa and South America and safety is paramount when travelling with children. We booked through this company as they seemed to be efficient and provided camps in Yala and other parks too. We knew what sort of thing to expect and not to expect luxury. We were there to see the rainforest and, hopefully contribute to its upkeep as well as the local tourist economy. We chose to stay in standard tented accommodation as, at the time we booked, the only noted distinction between that and luxury accommodation was the fact that you didn't have a private loo. At double the price we didn't feel that it was worth it - the website has changed a little since we booked, now offering 3 levels of accommodation. It became clear when we arrived that there was no dedicated vehicle associated with the camp. The company refers to a jeep on their website, we saw no evidence of one. We had to wait 3/4 hour for a local guy in a pick up truck to turn up to take us into the rainforest (which we had to pay for). I am a fit, active 47 year old, however I twisted my ankle on the steep descent to the camp because there are no steps and we were left to carry our bags. It was wet slippy and dangerous. We were the only ones staying in the camp. We had confirmed that we wanted a large tent for four (rather than two twos) and this company had confirmed that was available however not one of the small mouldy pod tents fitted that description. The whole atmosphere of the camp was edgy and unsafe. With nobody else there I even felt vulnerable as a woman and that it wouldn't be safe to leave our luggage there during the days. We were promised a guide, however, the (very nice) site manager Mr Kumar informed us that he could take us for a walk that afternoon and he was to be our guide. He had arrived 3 weeks earlier from Kandy and knew nothing about Sinharaja. There was no programme of what to visit/ what to see and Mr Kumar asked us what we wanted to do. At that point, we decided to leave. The most distressing part of the whole experience was actually witnessing the grinding poverty of those who we met on the ground. Not a penny of the vast price we paid filtered to the locals. The thieves in this scenario bask further up the food chain and this is an extremely cynical operation. Mr Kumar became almost panicky when we decided to go - he was so hungry that he wanted to eat before sorting things out for us and his meal was the left overs of our brief lunch. I spent 20 minutes on the phone to Mr Janaka, his boss, to confirm that we were not leaving because of anything Mr Kumar had done - because he was scared of what would happen to him. As we left Mr Kumar pointed out another camp and said that that one was a good one. Perhaps the other one (on the website) was busy? Perhaps we were unlucky, who knows? I have corresponded with Sri Lankan Expeditions since returning in the hope of reclaiming some of our money. I like to give people a chance and I had hoped to be able to say at the end of this sorry tale that we were just unlucky and that this responsible company had reimbursed us some of our costs. Not a bit of it! I have received two inaccurate, defensive emails and then - nothing. I have no idea whether they provide a good service in other camps elsewhere - but I have no intention of finding out. AVOID at all costs! Go to Taprobane instead - it's cheaper!

Book a night at The Rainforest Ecolodge (you can find them on booking) and take the waterfull trip next morning. It’s a 2-3 hours medium tour, very nice, good guides. The arrive there, last 8 km are a little difficult, but at the end of the day is a very good experience. Enjoy!

Yes you could, because basically the 3hr!! walk is just to the waterfall and then back on same track. So you could turn back at any time. Remember it will be quicker on way out as you won't be looking at things as much, so don't turn back too soon.

How many days should we stay in Deniyaya to visit the Forest? We are at Tangalle at the Moment. Planning to take the Bus to Matara and then Deniyaya.
And how about the entry price and tracker boy?
Thanks.

Hello. 2 days it will be good because to walk a full day it will the best thing to do. We paid 26,35 $ (entrance including) for 5 hours and our guilde wes the son of our hotel (Rainforest Mount Lodge) I am sure you can find a best price with negociation. Good travel.

What is the best part of the park for birding/wildlife? The Deniyaya side or the Kalawana side? Which part is the least crowded? How long will it take to get there (Deniyaya or Kalawana) from Mirissa by bus or taxi? And how long from Deniyaya or Kalawana to the Negombo airport? Thanks in advance!
Written 2 December 2018
Both entrances are great for birding. Wildlife is only small animals, insects etc and a few deer. There is supposed to be an elephant within the park. Waterfalls are closed to Deniyaya. If you go to Deniyaya, you are going away from the airport. On the other hand Kalawana is in between Mirissa and Negombo airport. Suggest taking a taxi as there would be no direct link from mirissa to Kalawana or Deniyaya. Mirissa to Kalawana - 3 hours by car. Kalawana to Negombo also about 3 hours by car. Mirissa to Deniyaya - 2 hours. Deniyaya to Negombo 4 hours via highway. Hope this helps.
