We stopped with a tour group and stayed two hours. Such a good experience! The tour was informative, giving context for Oberndorf as well as the creation of the hymn. I especially enjoyed the peaceful little chapel where Silent night was introduced. The song essentially...More

This tiny chapel is a replica of the original on the original site. It probably only seats about 30 people and has stained glass windows commemorating the writing of the Christmas Carol. The chapel is set in a pretty square and a bit off the...More

The Silent Night Chapel was an interesting stop. The original chapel is gone. The chapel is a copy of the original. It is very tiny, but beautiful. The museum is nice, but it focuses more on the salt trade. Glad I visited, but it is...More

My wife, son and I discovered this chapel in 1988 by accident. On this trip we wanted to show the two friends that were with us something that isn't in every guidebook. The current chapel is a historical rebuild of the original. The songwriter of...More

We drove through a snow storm from Germany on Christmas Eve to Oberndorf to the Silent Night Chapel. It was magical and one of the most memorable moments of my life. Definitely worth the drive!

This is a very small chapel where the famous "Silent Night" was wrote and played for the first time. This place makes you feel overwhelming when standing there singing all together "Silent Night" song in the Christmas Eve evening.

We went for the service on Christmas Eve and it was a bit of a disappointment. Hard to hear the service as everyone was chatting around us. Didn't get to go inside as queue was too long. Massive crowds and almost crushed at the exit....More

Well, it's not Mass (Eucharist) but a short 30-min open air service outside the chapel to commemorate the first performance of Silent Night in 1818. There are a few places to eat but as Christmas Eve dinner is the main... More
