About
The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. In 2014, the Zoo became the first nature destination in the country accessible to persons with physical disabilities. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

A wildlife tour and sleepover you'll never forget!
Aug 2021
We spent the night in a rustic cabin on the water at The Tropical Education Center (Belize Zoo Lodge) and went on a private night tour to see the zoo's nocturnal animals. Everything about the experience was incredible, thanks to Melvin, Juan Carlos and Edward who took such great care of us. We loved every single minute - from the nature sounds coming from the swamp and the delicious, home-cooked meals, to the up-close-an-personal wildlife experiences to buying all kinds of unique items in the gift shop. If you go to Belize, this is a must-do! It was the absolutely perfect way to spend our last night in Belize before heading back home.

PS: I had a bunch of photos to add to this review, but after trying three different times to upload them to TripAdvisor, I gave up.

Night tours and lodging are a must!
Sep 2021
We spent the night in the Zoo, and after a week in Placencia, this stay is what my six year old keeps talking about. Our cabin was over a swamp that had a crocodile (now named Joe) who'd swim over and lounge beneath the deck when you called him. There's a small, cool pool, wonderful food, and a dedicated staff who love what they do.

The importance of the staff cannot be overrated. Juan Carlos wakes up at five to go bird watching every morning. His enthusiasm is absolutely contagious. JC served as our concierge on numerous occasions, driving us to the airport and cave tubing for a fraction of other quotes. It feels good knowing that your taxi fare is going towards such a great cause.

We went on a 1.5 hour night tour for the same price as visiting our local zoo here in the United States. We fed the tapir and watched as Jose led the jaguar to roll over for his treats. Again, Jose's love of the animals was absolute. He'd been there for years, and hearing the backstory on adoptions, recovering from hurricanes, etc, were integral to the experience. Also amazing is walking through a zoo at night, standing by the cage with a flashlight waiting for a 100-pound predator cat to appear from the darkness. Too cool!

Best “Zoo”
Sep 2021 • Couples
The only zoo my wife and I visited together. This zoo rehabs injured wildlife and releases them back into the wild after doing so. There are some exceptions to the releasing (ie- vultures that are blind and would not survive in the wild, a Jaguar who has been rehabbed three times because locals keep shooting at her). A must see!

What fun!
Jul 2021
So many animals to see at the Belize Zoo! It is recommended we visit the zoo by a friend who had been there. The small zoo was on the way from the airport to San Ignacio, so it was our first outing after arriving in Belize. It helped to lay the foundation for beginning to understand the wildlife and their needs in this sub-tropic climate.

Nice afternoon at zero o

Our last stop after being in Belize for a couple of months. Great home for animals that otherwise would not have a home.

My son described it as a sanctuary, not a zoo!

Worth the stop. Do the private tour for a more in depth experience
Jun 2021
The zoo has regular admission and you can reserve a private tour with a zookeeper that will take you around and feed the animals. The interaction is a lot of fun. The zoom is half way between BZE and San Ignacio so it is a fun stop. We have Ben to many zoos around the world. They work very hard to take care of rescue animals. The animals appear to be well fed. There are a lot of animals that have been injured and brought here.

A fine place to stop but not a “must see”
Jun 2021 • Couples
We had a fine time at the Belize Zoo, but it’s certainly not a “can’t miss” spot. The animals are all native to Belize and the habitats are relatively large, which is nice to see. Wear bug spray!! Overall I was happy to spend money to support the conservation of these species but if you’re on the fence, I’d probably do something else.

Traumatizing attack by escaped monkey
Jul 2020
It has taken me a long time to write this, but it should be publicly available information so all visitors know the risk: in short, my experience at this zoo ended in me being attacked by an escaped monkey. The zoo was negligent on several fronts --- for example, they let visitors in before walking the grounds to account for their animals that morning, and they knew this monkey had escaped its enclosure previously.

What happened was: we were the first visitors let in the zoo that day. Within minutes of entering, my partner and I encountered said monkey walking on the pedestrian pathway just out of sight of the entrance. We both froze in surprise, but the monkey immediately became agitated, jumped at me, (as I was in front,) and aggressively bit both of my hands. The other person in my party had to intervene to stop the attack. To say the least, this was an incredibly traumatizing experience. I was rushed to the ER for sutures, our vacation was ruined, we had to immediately fly to a US-based ER for proper shots, I wasn't able to work for months as my hands healed, and the zoo did NOTHING to make the situation right. To this day, I still have physical pain from that attack, and this is the first time I'm mentally ready to write about it.

I'm honestly curious if the zoo has done anything, as a result of this incident, to stop this from happening to anyone else? I'm also curious, if they reply, why they chose not to make me whole/compensate for losses, despite knowing and admitting in writing they were at complete fault? That type of treatment does not fit their image but perhaps they knew I was too traumatized to return to Belize for court proceedings. Disgraceful treatment and not the right thing to do.

A very Special Zoo
Apr 2021
Normally we stay away from zoos while traveling but after learning online that the Belizee Zoo is home to only domestic animals and those who were found homeless or wounded, or worse, in the wilderness we decided to visit as the idea sounded very honorable and just what our hearts felt every zoo around the world should be about!

The grounds are great with making you feel like you are inside a tropical jungle even though is just right off the main highway/road leading from Belize City to Belmopan (about 40-45minutes very easy ride from Belize City on the main road, small rental is perfectly fine just slow down on the speed bumps!). The zoo isn't huge but each animal had plenty of room and wasn't cramped as it sadly sometimes is at other zoos - here it's all about the idea of making the zoo a home to each animal, not the animal an exhibit to the zoo!!!

We loved the stories and rhymes written for each zoo residents' home - I think we might have read it all as we definitely did stop by each point shown on the mini map you receive at the entrance - we loved it!

TIP: the entrance fee is $15 USD per person, credit cards accepted

TIP: the parking is very big and plenty of space, inside there are of course rest rooms, a small restaurant with very nice selection of souvenirs at very reasonable prices

Private Tour of the Belize Zoo
Jan 2021
We had a wonderful tour with Carlos at the Belize Zoo. The zoo is a wonderful rescue operation and all the habitats are very humane. Animals seem happy and healthy. A very unique experience - highly recommend if visiting Belize. Zoo is taking COVID very seriously and we felt safe visiting.
