Due to being poorly advertised, few seem to know about this place, the huge Buddha and pagoda tower, in the mountains of Katsuyama. This is a must-see if you're in Fukui, especially if you make the trip out to the nearby Dinosaur Museum. Have been...More

Third visit and always impressed by the complex and the size of the Buddha in the main hall. Inside apart from the statue also amazing with its hundreds of smaller statues. The five storey pagoda on site offers views over surrounding countryside. Carp in pool...More

travelling in late February, the snow around was a great background to visiting. We arrived at 4pm and the hours stared 9am to 5pm. Unfortunately closed. Disappointed. We found the Ono Castle also closed in February.

In Katsuyama did Tada-san decree, a pleasure dome be built for all to see. Sat within an incense-perfumed hall, Was Great Buddha some 17 meters tall, keeping council with five-score bodhisattva, beneath- sky-cleft! – the five-storey pagoda. Like with Katsuyama Castle, the construction of this...More

Impressively large temple in extensive grounds. Large number of Buddha statues in the temple including a huge cast iron one with other statues. A very tall pagoda on the site with good views across the local landscape.

Huge Buddha statue, bigger than Kamakura and Nara. Constructed in 1987, so not very historic. Buddha itself is very beautiful and surrounded by hundreds of smaller statues. Unlike Nara, it is virtually deserted outside the Japanese tourist seasons (except for ticket lady). The nearby pagoda...More

A Daibutsu (large statue of the Buddha) larger than the more famous one in Nara, and Japan's tallest five-storied Pagoda, hidden in the hills of Fukui. The surrounding buildings are awe-inspiringly large, that must be seen to be believed. Extremely quiet at the Buddha's temple,...More

This Buddha is lovely and huge. Supposedly, it is now (since 1987) the largest Daibutsu in Japan. In fact, the entire grounds and series of buildings are also expansive. Standing on either side of the Daibusu are 4 statuary Buddhas--tall and lean--and all 5 seem...More
