We had a Japanese friend who invited us so she knew how to time this trip. The red spider lilys were in full bloom, perfect weather, we went into the stream for a few steps, did some short hiking on the hill, ate some typical matsuri food and saw a performance with a monkey artist. On 30 September we drove to Kinchakuda Park to check out the red spider lilies. I had seen a photo which indicated there were mass plantings of these flowers. And we were not disappointed. However I suspect they would have been even more spectacular a week earlier as there were a number of flowers that were on their last legs.... More

The sea of spider lilies is the main attraction in Kinchakuda Park. It is a sight to behold. As expected there lots of visitors and taking photos is somewhat a challenge. This is a nice stop off from a hike or a place to relax at the end of a climb down from Mt Hiwada. A loop in the River Koma has created a flat area that used to be rice fields but is now part park and part flower / vegetable ground. There is a restored water mill in the... More
