Izumi city has a largest place where more than 10 thousand cranes fly from Siberia every winter in Japan. The Izumi City Crane Observation Center is the best place to observe the migratory cranes in Izumi. The Observation center is located just in front of the roosting grounds. There is a observation deck, which makes it an ideal spot for... More

We caught the shinkansen fom Kagoshima to Izumi station, wanting to catch the train from the station to see the cranes, we were 30 minutes too late. :( The last bus leaves Izumi station at 3.53pm. See photo below of bus timetable.

It was worth our nearly 2 hours slow drive from Kirishima to Izumi to observe the cranes. It was a pleasant surprise for my husband as he thought it was only a few cranes, but it was 12,034 cranes that day. (there is a notice board indicating the number of cranes for that day and the types of cranes). The... More

I arrived too late for the tour bus so I got a taxi as I really wanted to catch the cranes as the sun set. Luck was with me and the sun came out. You ned to stay past closing time in order to see the cranes fly across the sun! By about 6pm they were settled! Inside the centre... More

Every winter, the cranes that come to the city are a big attraction and a big event for the entire city. It really is impressive the first time you visit the Crane Center and see the 10,000+ cranes that visit every year. They start to arrive in the city from the end of October or the beginning of November and... More

We arrived as part of a three week birdwatching holiday self drive. Obviously the Cranes were a key part of out itinerary. It was well signposted. Free entry but a small fee for the observation tower. We saw 17000 yesterday with good views. Good visitor information and plenty of car parking Definitely recommended for all including generalist birdwatchers as well... More

We have to confess that we are bird watchers, so this was a 'must see' sight on our trip to Japan. You really need a car to be able to access the observation centre as it's approximately 10km from Izumi railway station. There's an entry fee of 210 yen for adults. Although the observation area is accessed by a flight... More

You can observe the cranes as they came back to feed and roost in the evening. The observatory tower is enclosed thus not very good for taking photos.
