We visited the gardens in really bad weather, as there was a typhoon nearby and most tourists seemed to have cancelled their trips to Chiran. The Samurai Gardens are not a must see in Chiran, but if you have the time, enjoy a lovely stroll...More

I went here from Kagoshima. There is a bus at bay number East 16 at the bus station outside Kagoshima Chuo station that takes you to the Samurai Houses (Bukeyashiki-iriguchi) stop. Look for the bus with the destination "Chiran, Peace Museum (Tokko Kannon)". Bus signs...More

We love this place. The "garden" is in fact a collection of old houses where samurai lived here long time ago. We drove but we believe you can take a bus to come here from Ibusuki or Kagoshima. There is a ticket office to buy...More

Interesting houses, with the occupants watching the tourists with some degree of interest! The gardens are well maintained and the place is lovely. A great place to see.

This is a really peaceful well preserved samurai area and was made more interesting somehow by the fact that people still live in many of the houses. Be careful to pay - it is easy to miss where to do so.

Agree with previous reviewer with surprise at poor reviews, this place is amazing! The gardens are beyond stunning, the houses unique... you really can transport yourself back in time, a place like no other.

Great insight in the samurai culture of feudal Japan. Exquisitely maintained gardens that provide you with intense, yet calming experience.

Hate to be snobbish, but from looking at several reviews, I doubt the average non-Japanese or non-Asian-interested and informed Westerner can appreciate these gardens. Going back over 275 years, they reflect back what these samurai -- really village elders -- saw in and took back...More
