Visited in early December as the snow monsters were just growing and, despite heavy snowing, we were lucky to be able to see them on the way up to the mountain on the cable car and mostly through the glass window at the summit station's cafe (while having lunch). The weather was uncompromising that the viewing platform was closed but... More

Travelling in a cable car to the summit is really a life time experience and all the trees have become snow monsters - covered with powdery snow. At 1661 meter height, it is a real fun to be there with family & friends for a day. We can walk around there and it enjoyable.

To view Zao juhyo (frost covered trees) takes good luck. The last time I went up there the weather did not cooperate. The spectacular sights I had hoped to see were all lost in low visibility conditions. But as the place, with these natural wonders, is worth many more visits in the future, I left with no regrets and decided... More

Wow! If you are lucky enough to have a clear day, the views through the rime covered trees and up to the the deepest blue skies imaginable will be etched in your mind forever. Even if you get a cloudy or snowy day, it is worth taking the two gondolas up to see the amazing formations. Although it wasn't a... More

Unfortunately it was a windy and snowing when I went up there whilst skiing at Yamagata. They are formed into fantastic shapes by the wind and give the impression of a legion of snow monsters. I would like to ski through them on a nice clear day as the view from up there is magnificent.

Cold but worth the trip, the unique formation on the trees is probably due to the light and minute snow flake crystals formation, so light that they get collected on the trees. 17 below when I was there so bring ur gear, wind was strong as well.

My 2nd trip to Zao mountains. 1st in spring 2012 for the onsen. This time I came for the snow monsters. I took a bus from yamagata station. Please purchase a ticket at the bus station before boarding the bus, cost 980¥ one way, and took about 40mins. Before you even plan on this trip, please prepare proper winter clothes,... More

see more pictures at http://tabitatsu.blogspot.com/2010/02/rime-on-trees-at-zao-yamagata_27.html I went there in Feb 2008. After a 40-minute bus ride from Yamagata train station, I arrived at the bus terminal of Zao Onsen (Zao hot spring). From here you can take the ropeway up into the mountains. The lift took me to the highest point (1661m), but it was too cold to enjoy the... More
