Zap Onsen Ski resort, Yamagata prefecture, Japan. January Master ski time? Apparently. The Japanese have been coming here for an eternity, yet for the western ski fans this is a magical Japanese style winter wonderland of gobsmacking proportions. You can count on the Japanese to ensure the facilities are 1st rate in all regard . This Ski resort has 37... More

From Yamagata station bought round trip ticket package at Y4,000 including bus and ropeway and get the informative map and booklet. The locket is in front on the left side from queue bus to Zao Onsen. May drop luggage at the left side of the ticket counter. We were waiting for bus ride at 8am and took 40minutes arrival to... Zao Onsen is a great resort that offers something for everyone. Beware is you are a snowboard as there is a lot of traversing between lifts which could be a bit of pain. Skiing or boarding between the snow monsters is something you should at least do once during your stay.

This is a gorgeous mountain with a wide variety of trails for all ski and snowboard levels. Most of the courses are long!! Beautiful view from mountain. You can see the snow monsters at Paradise course. Lifts move very slowly and safe for beginners. The slope is clear and you have enough space. Please relaxed in a hot spring after... More

Zao ski area is famous with its size, number of courses, course distance, quality of snow and its beautiful and amazing Snow Monsters, and Onsen hot springs in hotels/ryokan/inns around the district, which is a must to relieve muscle pain after skiing. I've been there many times for these 3 decades and with these advantages, it did not hinder me... More

Zao Onsen Ski Resort Snow Monster Visit Access: We drove to the resort from Utsunomiya (3 hours) and had no problems parking at the base of Mount Zao. We traveled to the top of the mountain using the recommended Zao Ropeway. The route to the summit consists of two segments on different ropeways. The first ropeway car was very crowded... More

Zao ski resort is amazing. The run variety is vast, lift passes are reasonable priced, staff are ever so friendly and the snow is incredible. The snow monsters truly are a masterpiece of nature. This resort suits all skill levels for skiing and boarding, and they have English speaking teachers for those needing lessons.

A nice and interesting village and ski resort. We come across several travellers who were on their 2-3 stays at Zao. And now I know why, and probably will go again. Not too fair from Tokyo, clear and manageable transport arrangement, money for value accomodation and restaurants, easy navigation, though no off piste but still interesting slopes, area larger than... I visited Zao as part of a powder tour then stayed on Solo for another two days. This resort offers a traditional Japanese experience with great snow onsens and food. The snow monsters are unique and definitely worth checking out, as are the local onsens. The terrain is huge and varied, with plenty of piste and safe tree options between... More
