Small museum with only a few exhibits, not worth the time or extra admission fee. There were some swords, some old letters/parchment, and some kimonos. About half of it is not insulated, which makes it almost like being outside. Warning: you will have to take your shoes off, but they provide slippers for walking around.

Unbelievable craftsmanship and lively garden views are intact. It's unclear if this is a post 1945 reconstruction or really old. Woodworkers delight. Museum has a generous collection donated by the Li family... They must be royalty by the quality of their offerings. Warm regards to them.

Museum was divided into multiple sections, showcasing what the Li family has been keeping for centuries. These items included a sets of armours, Noh related items, tea ceremony items, Japanese musical instruments as well as other classical literature items, like poems. It was kind of cool looking at all these items from years gone by, seeing how their lives were... More

Nothing to add to the existing comprehensive reviews of this delightful museum other than a personal response that I particularly enjoyed the costumes, room recreations and garden. The staff were very helpful too. I strongly recommend a visit.

This museum was a big surprise! We had planned to visit the castle, and didn't even know that there was a museum on the premises. So we were delighted to explore this small but beautifully laid out and curated museum. The combination of fabulous armor and traditional weaponry (beautiful swords and arrows), pottery, paintings, calligraphy and the lovely selection of... More

Visitors to Hikone Castle can enter the Hikone Castle Museum for an additional 400 yen. The museum consists of a lot of historical artifacts including costumes, books, swords and (most interesting) masks. All items are labeled in English, while fuller explanations are in Japanese. The museum is well-organized though whether it's worth the additional money depends on how much time... More

The Ii clan ruled in Hikone for over 200 years, which also meant they left behind some interesting historical pieces. The museum exhibits some of these pieces, offering an insight into the history of Hikone Castle, it's rulers and the surrounding. There are (sometimes brief) English translations for most of the exhibits. There is also a portion regarding Noh theatre,... More

Small museum, though interesting. The museum sets out the old city and castle layout and shows how the land was developed. There is a lot of history here on early Japan.

I visited the Castle and Museum with my daughter late one afternoon. The free guide asked if we would like a tour but apologized that his English was not too good. My daughter explained to him that that was ok as she could speak fluent Japanese and would translate for me. Our guide was very knowledgeable and also keen to... More

We would have liked more history. Wonderful exhibits especially of warrior armor. There is a Noh stage with comfortable seating. Super exhibit of Noh masks. Strongly recommended
