Something very different. The castle is remote, wind swept and stark ... but great. There are guides in parts of the castle who are knowledgeable, have a sense of humour and want to share things with you. Well worth a visit and shop afterwards sells some interesting presents

It's worth noting that I am a corporate member, so didn't pay on the day. I just had to pay the nominal fee for the horse display. I visited with my 2 kids and we spent a good 2 hours here exploring before seeing the 'art of ménage' display. The ruins are good to look at and I also had... More

Made a detour to see the horse ménage on our way to see a show at Buxton Opera House. Loved to see the horses and riders in period costume, only complaint was it could have been longer and the commentary was too quiet. Felt like a very special experience.

Really enjoyed this one, probably my favourite English heritage site. Very enjoyable, beautiful gardens, fairly dog friendly. Lovely views From all around, very informitive audio your. Very nice feel to it, not massive in size but huge in presence and feel. Definate stop in my opinion.

We happened to visit on a day when they had horse menage displays which were excellent (not sure how often these are held but worth checking) The castle itself, which is more of large house is an interesting set of buildings and well worth the visit.

A very interesting site with a variety of buildings and amazing views. There's littl;e left of the interior of most buildings however the small castle still has its panelling. The absence of artefacts does not detract from the pleasure of enjoying the architecture and history of the place. Also great staff who were knowledgable and interesting.

Bolsover Castle is mostly a ruin apart from the little castle which has been preserved and is more like a manor house than a castle, it is undergoing some restoration by English Heritage and some of the rooms are very bare. The ruined parts are very picturesque and must have been quite magnificent when they were intact. The riding school... More

I grew up local to Bolsover and loved it as a child, so returned with high expectations. Sadly, I now found it a little disappointing. The vistas over Derbyshire and Notts are still lovely in the grounds. The Little Castle is nicely preserved in general but the kitchen was my favourite in the past and this is now empty due... More

Just off the M1 past Chesterfield, Bolsover Castle is a gem in the Derbyshire countryside.. Less of a castle more a country house, the property is gradually being restored, room by room by English Heritage. Formerly the country seat of William Cavendish who created a school to train horses in the art of dressage. Whilst the buildings are stunning in... More

It was not what I expected, firstly it's not a castle as such more of home, small but very well preserved. I used the tape machine that tells you all about the place and using this brought the castle to life. Well worth the entrance fee.
