The Himeville Museum and Fort is both a historical site (the old fort, and prison) as well as a well-kept local history museum. , Each of the rooms is either a room in the house, representing the era, or it is dedicated to the life and times of the area: the prison, the telephone exchange, the school: the farming implements of the time. What makes this museum different is that it also represents the varieites of communities in the area: from the original inhabitants, the first people of South Africa, the Khoi/San with local caves able to be visited to see their representations there, through to the settlers and other people of the wider area, to the fauna and flora, clothing and the kitchens of the day: Open garden courtyard in the middle of the fort, shaded, and a bench to rest on - this is a representative and diverse museum that has something of interest to everyone, young and old, local and from all over the globe.

A hidden gem! One of the better cared for museums I have visited in this country. They have a very impressive collection of local artefacts. They even have a room dedicated to the local trout fishing industry which was surprisingly interesting. Nice and informative about bushman paintings. Immaculately cared for. Friendly staff who stayed a bit late for us to... More

Himeville Museum was originally built as a fort in the Boer War, and later became a prison. It has an an excellent display of Bushman / San art and artefacts. Also an informative display of fossils. It provides an excellent overview of the local area, and local history, including that of the major Himeville families. This rural museum is well... More

From the outside the Museum looks quite small, but once greeted by the friendly staff the range of exhibits is simply amazing and well organised into separate rooms (cells). I particularly liked the fishing room, I still use some of the flies exhibited.

We received a warm welcome where we given the history of the town and the museum, which is community run. All the items have been donated by the families of the area, which makes it very special. Museum is in pristine condition and is a must to get a feel and understanding of the town. No entrance fee, just a... More

This great little museum housed in a sand sandstone building originally erected as a fort in the 1890s is a treasure trove of photographs implements memorabilia and anecdotes regarding the history of this area. The curator went out of her way to make our visit interesting in fact fascinating.

We stopped off here after checking out of the Himeville Arms and were pleased that we did. Although small, the museum packs in a huge amount of information which is displayed in a meaningful order. The museum building has a fascinating history and the displays make the very most of the rooms and space available. Well worth a visit, just... More
