I wish all cemeteries look like this one in Sapanta. It is a very colourful place. Almost all graves are similar and present important events of buried people. The death is not so scary in this place. I definitely recommend to visit this place.

Sapanta is located within a stones-throw from the Ukrainian border in northern Romania, and it is a good distance from the more-travelled routes in Transylvania, but it is worth the drive. The Merry Cemetery is unique. The church, with its colourful tiled roof, is interesting,...More

This cemetery is like no other I have ever seen. The headstones are vertical blue painted shafts with humorous or otherwise revealing information about the deceased. It is more like an outdoor folk museum than a cemetery.

No.3 on a check-list for visiting Maramures. We have been there for the first time and spent one hour. It is something rare...you must see!

Very colourful wooden tombstones. Well maintenance with true meaningful tombstone for the pass-away! What a culture site. Worth visiting..

I wouldn't call the cemetery merry, funny, but defenitily unique, nicely painted. It is interesting and if you read Romanian, you can get to know what happened to the people who are lying there. In a short description there is the lifestory of those buried...More

This Cemetery and church were lovely to see. The headstones were amazing and the church was very colorful. Too bad they were all in Romanian, I would have appreciated knowing what they said, but that's too bad for me. I enjoyed looking at them. Big...More

Sapanta is the genuine village in Maramures county that you cannot miss with its blue crosses and the story of each person life and death. Visit the merry cemetery and buy an old traditional table cloth or bedlinen to remember the vibe of Maramures.

We all know the cemetery from books and documentaries and it still fascinates us with its meriness in the face of death. I loved the idea of receiving a fridge magnet instead of the usual piece of paper as entrence fee.

You could get by car or you could find connections to take the train from Iasi at least to Sighet-- and then there might be some buses to Sapanta where the Cemetery is

You are supposed to pay 4 RON entry fee, which includes the right to take photos. I can't recommend any accommodation in the village, but it certainly exists.

No. There are no similar cemeteries in Romania and it takes quite awhile to drive there. It takes about five hours from Cluj-Napoca.
