A great natural reserve which gives you chance to see the lava flows and views before watching the sun set behind the active volcano. And then at sundown you get to see the magma bubbling in the heat of the volcano. Highly recommended

This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been! The mornings, when the monkeys and birds wake up, is a symphony.....you can view the birds and monkeys, and sometimes an iguana, from your balcony.

The Natural Reserve at Laguna de Apoyo is a great spot to relax and to enjoy scenic views or a swim. They have a few restaurants nearby that offer good food and lake views. The lake is warm and the waters are clear thereby ensuring a good swim!

it is a nice reserve. If you visit it, you will find a lot of exciting species that live in it. One of them is the salamandra that is the most exoctic species you can find in nicaragua. You can also see the beautiful crater that adorns this reserve. It is appropiate to have a walk, because you can breathe the cool air around it. its paths are wonderful. finally you can see the blue lagoon that sorrounds this beautiful reserve.

This is a most beautiful and atmospheric location in Nicaragua. I wish I had made time to stay longer. I stayed 3 nights at the Estacion Biologica which is linked with the Spanish School. I was able to help out with some of the research projects going on at the station and also hired guides to take me on some walks in the Nature Reserve. There is lots of wildlife....many species of birds, butterflies, moths, bats and two species of monkey including Howlers. Such a memorable stay but the future of the area is dependant on the careful management of the habitats being guided by the Estacion Biologica.....a truly worthwhile role.

We were blown away when we arrived at this beautiful and tranquile nature spot. The transport to the laguna isn't easy, unless you are willing to pay for a taxi. But this also makes it less crowded and comfortably quiet.
We had a bad experience though, when we were hiking up to the viewpoint of Katarina, where we were robbed by 3 men armed with machetes. Unfortunately the police didn't really care to help, eventhough the friendly hosts of our resort did everything they could to get them to come. We did report the incidence to the local park rangers though, who said they would be happy to escort future tourist on this hike.
We definitely recommend others to go to Laguna de Apoyo (where we felt safe), but make sure to bring one of the friendly rangers if you go hiking.

We hooked up with a tour guide in Granada that recommended the laguna de apoyo, best recommendation ever. For $35 our group of 6 was driven to The Monkey Hut, a small hostel/resort on the lake. There is a public beach (free) but it was CROWDED. The Monkey Hut charged $6 per person, offered reasonably priced food and beverages and a private dock and lake front for swimming. The $6 entry fee included the use of kayaks, water tubes, chairs, etc. If you are staying in Granada I highly recommend you make this an afternoon trip. Our guide spoke exceptional English and made additional recommendations for restaurants, shopping, etc. I would highly recommend you use this tour operator if given the opportunity.

Laguna de Apoyo was by far a nice surprise in our travels in Nicaragua! The lake was not easy to find but once you do you be glad you did. we had a great dinner at La Abuela ecoldoge. They rent cabins on the lake, they have a pier where you can jump into the lake (warm termal waters)....the lodge rents canoes and other water toys so you can spend the day in the water.

Laguna de Apoyo is on the way to Granada (about 20 minutes from Masaya). we drove from Jinotepe Nicaragua and it took us about 45 minutes by private car.

The place is not a 4 star hotel but you will enjoy the location of the lodge and the lake. At least spend 1 night in the area. This lake I cannot tell you it was a gem!!!

Laguna de Apoyo is a lake in a dormant volcano. It reminds me of our own Crater Lake in southern Oregon. The great difference is you can swim and sail in it. The water is pristine and the wind clean and steady. Listen for the "holler monkeys". Don't miss the view from the rim of the volcano from the lovely little Nicaraguan town of Katerina. It is quite something.

I stayed at the San Simian, in a comfortable sort of "palapa", that overlooked the lake. You can swim from the San Simian and sail their little Hobie Cat. Dana makes food that has the happy combination of being tasty and healthy.
