Beautiful wide beach with fine sand and few small rocks in the water. Great waves but not dangerous. Crowded with locals on a weekend. Lot of trash left behind. :(

We went there on a Tuesday, arrived at 9:30 am. There is a paid parking that one can use and we decided to do so, it’s 1000 colones per hour. There were so many Ticos already there and more arriving. We went on to the beach and it was 75% full, spaces are tight, we walked farther in the direction of Playa Blanca, but only a few spots were left with a shade. Decided to settle on a wet sand under a tree. I walked to the water and the corals were so rough on feet, I had to walk very carefully. I was wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt to cover the sunburns. Once I started to swim I was checking the water visually and didn’t see anything, however I got a sting on my wrist where it was exposed and it felt like sharp needles around my wrist. I came out and looked at it. It was small swollen red patches, it looked and felt exactly like stinging nettle if you ever experienced it. I used an alcohol wipe and out a jojoba oil on it. It went away in an hour or so. However we left the beach right away. It was a good idea.

A short drive from San José, Playa Mantas /Playa Blanca are a nice day trip to relax and enjoy in a family friendly environment.
Both are supposed to be accesible to all, because Costa Rica has NO private beaches, but their access is a bit tricky.
Playa Mantas can be reached at no cost, though you have to pay for parking.

Monkeys come to the beach at Playa Manta regularly. They are fantastic to watch but people please stop feeding them!!!
Monkeys require to travel many kilometres a day for exercise, for food and for mating. When humans feed the monkeys, the monkeys have no reason to climb and travel. The result is unhealthy monkeys with poor diets. As well, since the monkeys do not go into other areas to mate then end up mating with there own family members causing the deformities in their offspring.

Playa Mantas is beautiful. We went there to see if we could get to Playa Blanca but we ended up staying there for the day. There were families having BBQs, people listening to music and children playing around. Lovely atmosphere! And it was not crowded either!
You could get super close to some pelicans. That was super cute!
The only negative thing is that the beach is very rocky, so better wear some water shoes to get in the sea.

Why nobody talks about Playa Manta and Playa Blanco? Well, because you can't get to it unless you stay at Punta Leona Resort; hands down the best two beaches in CR: one great for the family and almost empty every-time I go there, no waves, surrounded with Rain Forest, the other nice small waves for bogie boarding and absolutely the best in Costa Rica, respectively.

We were coming from Santa Elena, going back to San Jose. I wanted a beach to go to but didn't want to drive hours further South for a prettier one. This sufficed. Public beach you pay to enter and car was safe in lot. Didn't see monkeys, but saw huge iguanas and tiny crabs. More crowded than Playa Dona Ana and no tables. Still relaxing though. Almost no waves. Travel south on Highway 34, and just past Hotel Punta Leona, there is a road to your right that you travel several miles down to get to public beach access. The hotel is gated so you can't access it that way.

there is only one blue sign pointing west from the main highway. you might think you are going the wrong way....persevere! after some gravel road driving (watch for camoflaged speed bumps!!!), you will get to a mid-size vacation development and a public (with security) parking lot. the beach is great with lots of shade and no big surf (unlike other local beaches). you can even spot scarlet macaws and hunt for sea shells.

This is a very nice beach esp if you go during the week when it’s not crowded. I didn’t see any restrooms there so good luck if you have to go. I really don’t like swimming in any part of the ocean in CR because there is too much sewage going into them. Also very close to river estuaries where all of the crocodiles come to visit you. Walking on the beaches are fine but wear good shoes as there are fishing hooks, glass & other things you can get hurt on at the beaches. Don’t leave any of your belongings on the beaches as well, they won’t be there when you come back. Beware of the many vendors as well. Lifeguards? Sometimes.
