Loved this Beautiful Cathedral!
Sep 2018 • Friends
If you are visiting Vigevano, you will certainly want to see this little beauty. It's just to beautiful to miss. Everyone must visit the Piazza Ducale, and The Duomo of Vigevano.

Pretty Baroque Cathedral, but the Brilliance is in the Facade
Mar 2018 • Family
The Duomo of Vigevano, dedicated to St. Ambrose, is a standard high-baroque cathedral with a Latin cross layout and opulent decoration.

However, two aspects make this cathedral interesting from an architectural standpoint: first, it has two pulpits (one on each side of the chancel).

More significantly, the facade -- by the architect, mathematician and bishop Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz -- is a clever solution to an esthetic problem. The cathedral, built on the footprint of an ancient basilica, was situated an irregular angle to the Vigevano's main square; Caramuel designed a curved facade with four bays to disguise this fact and present an even front to the piazza. The third (from the left) of the four doors is actually the entrance to the main nave of the cathedral, but this asymmetry is visible neither from the outside nor the inside of the church.

This clever solution to an architectural problem makes the cathedral worth seeing even if you're feeling saturated with baroque.

The Cathedral is Roman Catholic cathedral and named after Saint Ambrose. it is located in the Main square (Piazza Ducale) of Vigevano.
It is the seat of the Bishop. It hosts an interesting museum with reliquaries, tapestry and other item collected over time.

Completes the symmetry of the central Piazza
Oct 2016 • Friends
The uniqueness of this church, while impressive in the interior,is the way it was modified on the exterior to present a symmetric facade to close the rectangular piazza.

Interesting history but dark and gloomy
Oct 2016 • Family
Even with a guide book this was not a very interesting cathedral. The most interesting aspect was the facade and its intrusion on the square- filling in the last side. It is Romanesque and so has very few windows high up, It is closed between 12 and 4pm, so was quite dark when it re-opened although in the height of summer it might be better. You need to be able to read Italian, to make the most of the artwork.
