Naturally I was interested in the place that bears my last name. I had already discovered that the name of the city derives from the Greek "hierax", falcon. The word disappeared in Italian and is only a last name now. According to a legend, the inhabitants of the coast, fleeing from a Saracen attack in 915 CE, were led by... More

I remember Taormina many decades ago when it was a lovely and pretty village. Now it's a chi chi tourist supermecado driven by economic forces that have stolen the heart of a once proud lion and needs but an admission turnstile to complete the desecration. I couldn't await to arrive each of three times I went and couldn't wait to... More

You feel you are in a unique and special place as soon as you arrive here. The beautiful little stone streets leading to the cathedral and the spectacular panoramas all add to the experience. A calm and meditative place to visit and well worth it.

The hill town of Gerace is a treasure trove dating back to the 11th century. It is like going back in time wondering through the beautiful streets where you can find artisanal stores & cafes selling the best granita you will ever taste! When you arrive at the Cathedral in the pretty square on the Via Duomo you are amazed... More

The Duomo is a must if you are in Gerace and you should not miss it. Built over an older church, the Duomo has an impressive undergroung part, used as a museum, at least when I visited. The Duomo is the biggest cathedral in Calabria.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer from Marina di Caulonia and I'd like to take the opportunity to write something more and new for TA site. Gerace stands out already for its shape like an eagle's nest overlooking the Locri plain and the Jasmine coast. It has been built like a fortress with numerous outside and internal gates most... Beautiful old cathedral with features dating from various time periods - very well cared for and interesting to visit. The original Byzantine crypt is open to the public in addition to the later stages of construction.

My bias is that I found a small hilltop town very quaint, serene and educational. The different cultures that existed over the millennia have a distinct character that has been retained. As you come up the steps to the main cathedral, the moment you sight the main altar you know you are in a very special place. Some preparations were... More
