Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

This is a hidden gem. It doesn't look much from the outside but there is a lot to see inside and free entry. There are 4 floors with some good art and sculptures charting the history of modern art in Spain. There were quite a few young children there when we visited learning about art and then doing their own... More

The permanent collection is on the upper floors with special exhibitions on the ground floor, a little difficult to find as the sign on the wall is small, but a lovely gallery space to enjoy contemporary art.

Every Spanish city or large town seems to have an excellent contemporary art gallery, and this was also the case in Alicante. The gallery building is over several floors, all very spacious and well laid out. There is the right balance of enough art to stimulate without being overwhelming. The overall experience is subtly enhanced by the wonderful light in the... More

Probably the highlight of our stay in the small city of Alicante...this is a really well put together museum and an absolute credit to Eusebio Sempere, the artist most responsible for putting it together. It is set over three floors and there is lots to see but it didn't feel like over facing you. Could easily be done in an... More

We like contemporary art- and you need to for this gallery - and this introduced a whole new Spanish perspective. Without predominance by the usual suspects like Picasso, Miro,Dali etc opened up new areas not really know much of before. A bonus Magritte - on temporary display- was lovely but I remember it from a London show a year or... More

It's free so you have nothing to lose. A very successful space for a museum. Three floors of art of various quality (subjective of course!) a video installation worth seeing this month, why not pop in?

This gallery is worth a visit for the building alone. The exhibits are well presented in bright airy rooms perfect for the large canvases and optic/.kinetic installations

I really enjoyed walking around this great little art gallery full of Spanish contemporary art. On the top floor was work by Sempere which were interesting . great space to lose yourself in for an hour.

Beautiful building and great collection of modern art from the collection of Eusebio Sempere. I understand that from the 10 Jan there is a Rene Magritte exhibition. The reception lady was helpful and friendly.

Must see for museum lovers. The sculptures and paintings are very well worth a visit, and besides that, it's free!
