It's an imposing military fortification erected on the hill of Sarzana, and it overlooks the Magra Valley. Nowadays it's one of the symbol of the town.Known also as castracani, the fortress is composed by two main elements: the former is just the castle with its three bastions on the top, the latter is composed by a fortified embankment. Both the former and the latter form a kind of quad. Rich in charm, the structure undoubtedly deserves to be visited by those people who love culture.

I love this fortress! Just beware the opening hours

This is such a cool fort! You can go up in the tower and tower rooms and all the way under to the tunnels and rooms beneath the fort. Its being maintained but not restored or... read more

We found this one really astounding! It's so massive! The walls, the towers and the trench. Wonderful view of the valley. So unfortunate that it seems to be true what other people said here before: we were there at 10:30 (when it was supposed to open), and there was nobody, so we couldn't actually enter the fortress. The gate to... More

This is such a cool fort! You can go up in the tower and tower rooms and all the way under to the tunnels and rooms beneath the fort. Its being maintained but not restored or updated so it feels very authentic. Its not a gallery or exposition and there is no gold leaf or opulence, just a raw functional... More

It was just a perfect outing for a quick walk to stretch the legs. It's on the steeper side for a climb, but well worth it. Little hot dog stand with cold drinks at the back. Staff does their best to be helpful.

the fortress of Sarzanello is a great piece of Italian history. The place is mentioned in old chronicles and even in a celebration poem written at the court of Lorenzo De' Medici (the Magnificent). There would be a great deal to talk about and discover about the place... unfortunately the local guides fail miserably to do so. Apart that it's... More

Situated at the highest point in the town, this little fort provides some great views of the landscape and buildings below. Exploring the several floors and sub levels will take an hour or two. There's a mini museum style display at the main level and bathrooms on the top floor of the fort. When you get to the sub levels,... More

I visited the place during a gaming fair. It is a nice place for a couple of hours trip and afternoon picnic with children: they will love the feeling of being in a castle - walls, arrow slits, stairs - while the simple layout means they cannot get lost. Access is easy: park at the bottom of a small hill,... More

I'm old ruin, castles and fortresses lover, but this was really nothing special. Definitely it was nothing for 7 euros *2 adults*. Maybe with medieval festival it would be better, but there is really not much to see and the view is really not breathtaking. Next time we would just stay outside.

The architecture of the old roman fort is amazing there is a small fee to have a look around but even if you check it out from outside it is well worth a look

The Fortezza di Sarzanello is situated on a small hill just behind the city of Sarzana. It's not very far and you can walk up there: not too far or steep. It's quite nice and the view excellent but nothing compared to real castles...

Not too many visitors :-) Cool fortress, but the other fortress outside of town is much more interesting
