We did this hike with Henry after reading the multiple great reviews on Trip Advisor. We contacted him the night before via What’s App (+502 5836 7172) and he was able to add us to the group doing the hike the next morning. It cost us $30 USD per person including transportation, headlights, and snacks at the top. For the sunrise, Henry has his group perch at the top of a large rock, which is just a bit lower than the constructed observation deck that other groups arrive at, however has breathtaking panoramic views (better than the view from the observation deck in my opinion). After the sunrise and his talk about Atitlan history, we went to this observation deck for coffee, fresh home baked bread, and bananas. On our way down Henry took photos of us on the large rock - he’s a fantastic photographer and got several different shots/angles!
Of note, we were staying in San Marcos, so Henry had to arrange a tuktuk for us to meet the rest of the group in San Pablo. (I believe most of the hikers come from San Pedro). Taking a tuktuk at 4am through the dark and deserted streets of these small towns felt a bit scary but rest assured we arrived safely!

My mom, dad, and I had an amazing experience hiking up Rostro Maya with Pancho, part of Guatemalasurmesure. We initially contacted Henry and he put us in contact with Pancho since we wanted to go to the highest lookout point. Words cannot describe what an incredible guide Pancho is. To begin, he made sure my grandma could stay in San Juan and get to know the town as we went Rostro Maya. My mom almost gave up halfway through since the hike felt pretty strenuous for her (asthma + high altitude), but Pancho made sure she got to the top by motivating her and helping her up. You can tell that Pancho loves his job and the land, and he is incredibly knowledgeable. Please contact Henry or Pancho for any kind of excursion that you want to do while visiting Atitlán (hiking up San Pedro, traveling across the lake, etc.) . I can assure you that they will be the best tour guides you can find. Here is their information (just download Whatsapp and you'll be able to message them:

We did three activities through Henry and his brother, Kevin. Henry’s WhatsApp number is in the other reviews. I highly recommend both of them as tour guides.
The first day we hiked Indian nose with Kevin which is a relatively easy hike that ends in a beautiful view of the lake.
The next day we hiked San Pedro Volcano with Kevin which is a far more advanced hike. My husband is an excellent hiker, but I’m pretty horrible. Still we made it to the top. Kevin was very patient, and upbeat, and knowledgeable. The hike itself is beautiful and you can even camp at the top of the volcano if that’s your jam.
The third day we did a tour with Henry of the coffee plantation which is also a weaving collective. We also visited a honey bee farm - complete with honey tastings, and a chocolate making place. He was a friendly and upbeat tour guide.
Henry picked us up directly from our Lake Atitlan AirBNB in a water taxi each morning and dropped us off wherever we wanted (which was typically a restaurant to grab something to eat after the day’s adventure).

We went with Guatemala sur Mesure to the Mayan Face (or Indian Nose). Henry did a great job sharing his knowledge about this wonderful place and his beautiful country. You can simply contact him by whatsapp (+502 5836 7172). Apart from having a huge knowledge, he’s also a great paparazzo so you’ll have plenty of pictures of the epis sunrise :D

We did the tour with "Guatemala sur Mesure" and the guide Henry. He was great and he explained us a lot about the history of Guatemala and Lake Atitlán. The view was just spectacular, the pictures speak for themselves! He picked us up at 4 a.m. in San Pedro and we drove until Santa Clara (around 30 minutes). Then from there we walked around 20 minutes to the top. On the top he served coffee, bananas and apples. Thanks again for this amazing tour. We can highly recommend it! It's also cheaper than all the other tours. Just text him on +502 5836-7172

We went for the sunrise with a guide. Magnificent sunrise!
The guide made us coffee and gave us a little snack while we waited for the sun to come up.

I wanted to do a sunrise hike of La Nariz (Indian's Nose) in San Pedro in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, but I'm so glad i went on this hike with Matt and didn't make the sunrise. I can't say enough about the hike or Matt.
You can pay FAR less and get another guide just to take you on the hike. But know that it's private land so you'll be trespassing. With Matt you're in good hands knowing he's already arranged deals with the landowners so you won't have issues.
That's just the tip of the reason to book with Matt.
The view is incredible, but Matt's geology knowledge (he's a geologist) and love for it elevate this from a hike to a mind blowing, love for the area, what you forgot in school and more, experience.
Then add in his knowledge of the people and the area, and providing you an understanding of the culture, the history, thus giving you a deeper appreciation to your visit, the hike, and your tour of Guatemala.
You can hike and take pictures. Or you can learn, and fall in love with where you are, which is what Matt helps you accomplish. So when people ask you about your trip to Guatemala you have so much more to say.
Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks. The hike was supposed to end at 1:30, but we got back at 2:30. worth every minute more spent learning from Matt.
The hike is moderate (pretty easy for me), especially since you stop many times for lessons and views.
Like most people, WhatsApp is the best way to reach them, Matt is no exception, compared to phone or email. Very responsive.
Highly, Highly, Highly recommend booking Matt for any tours he offers, worth every penny. You won't be disappointed.
Check out his website (he's a geologist not a web designer, so trust the review)

Highly recommend doing this trip (worth the 3am rise!) but would NOT recommend doing it without a guided tour on your own. We read several blogs and were under the impression that this is doable DIY but found out we were wrong for two reasons: 1. It is nearly impossible to find the right trail once having got off the chicken bus without relying on a tour that happens to be there at the same time. 2. The people guarding the area and the viewing platforms (referred to as "banditos" in most blogs) are not accepting tourists who are unwilling to pay a Q50 entrance fee. We had only taken Q10 each with us as we were under the impression that this might do, but the locals have seen through this strategy and are making everyone hike back down who isnt going to pay the full amount. Whilst we did save a few dollars (we had to borrow the money from another tourist on a tour) ultimately this was not worth the hassle and arguing with the local guards. Paying a few dollars more and having a guide and direct shuttle transfer would definitely have been worth it.

Is this a safe hike with the recent death of British Catherine Shaw?

I would recommend going on a group hike organized by one of the companies so that you are with a number of other people for the moment It still remains unclear what the circumstances were for Catherine Shaw. It is a terrible tragedy and I hope they get to the bottom of what happened quickly. What a loss for the family and friends of Catherine.

YES! we did this hike 2 days ago and a group of sketchy people at the top (including a child and a woman sadly) tried to get money out of us and then threatened and even tried to push off the mountain. Had a machete and brought out a huge dog on a chain to try and threaten to get money out of us. The older man repeatedly swore and tried to punch my Male companion. We finally gave them some money and quickly got out if there. DO NOT TRUST GUIDES FROM OTHER GROUPS THEY LEAD YOU TO THEM!

Hey there, I read some reviews about hiking up Indian Nose with Matt the geologist. This sounds like fun! Does anyone know expensive it is, and how I can get in touch with him?

Hi Alessandro. I have hikes the Rostro Maya or (Indian Nose) a number of times. I have always gone with a local guide, but if you want to go with Matt, I found this on Google: Matt Purvis

* Armed Robbery * Indian Nose
We would like to mention that the activity organized from the surrounding towns of Lake Aticlan (San Pedro, San Pablo, San Marcos, etc.) for the Indian Nose Sunrise is not safe. Travel agencies offer membership with guide, but will never inform you that it has no police protection on site and no tourist police with you. Know that the locals know very well the dangerous places of Santa Clara, where places departure for the Indian Nose. We did not even have time to go to the entrance that we were attacked by 8 criminals armed with rifles and machetes. We were 6 tourists. We were attacked and threatened by rifles. Later, and there is the problem, all the other agencies have continued to offer tours for the Indian Nose. The tourist police and the municipal police had little information of our attack. They are still sending tourists to the same place and a second attack has occurred.
*Important*
Make sure to get in touch with locals before trekking and make sure you have at least one police presence with you. All locals know the danger of the mountains but the agencies close their eyes and continue to sell towers, and the next morning of our aggression.
Do not do business with San Pedro agencies, especially with NEXWAY TOUR agency. They lied to us all the way and did not want to refund our turn after being victimized.
The trekking in Guatemala is done, but make sure to have a police protection on the spot, because even while inquiring on the Internet we did not find any history of this kind. We have been unlucky and luckily we are alive, but know that this kind of attack exists and that it does not always happen to others...
It is a well-established fact in San Pedro, La Laguna Guatemala among locals that travel between villages is dangerous. Many making the trek have been robbed. For that reason I admired Indian nose from afar and felt no need to go Trekking. Swimming is my preference anyway there are a couple of hotels in Panajachel with pools. I endorse this poster's comment.
