SAKURA -JAPAN IN THE BOX- is a new form of night entertainment proposed by Meijiza, the theater with the longest history in Tokyo. Tokyo, the city which welcomes visitors from all over the world. Although there’s all kinds of different things to do in this vibrant city, night-time entertainment was somewhat lacking - until now! This program brings a new kind of enjoyment to a time slot in which there used to be nothing to do: 8:30 p.m. (7 p.m. on Sundays). Sakura is a high-school girl who just can’t seem to find interest in anything. That all changes when she meets a white fox and is taken on a journey across a mysterious land. By travelling through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, she starts to discover what is truly important. This performance blends Japanese traditional arts like dance and instruments and modern pop culture like anime to show off Japan’s true beauty, strength, and the changing of the four seasons. That’s not all! It's extremely vivid by being synchronized with the spectacular projection of animation film. SAKURA-JAPAN IN THE BOX- manages to pull you right into Sakura’s world. Worried about your Japanese language ability? Don’t be! Japan in the Box is designed to express Sakura’s thoughts and Japan’s seasons without relying on words, so every member of the audience can enjoy it. Sakura’s journey is about to begin - why don’t you join her?

I really liked this show, especially it's music. The whole show was a nice combination of some kabuki, dance, swordplay and some anime.

A fun musical performance show, although don’t go in expecting any kind of story. It’s basically a music and dance performance to show the surface-level tourist version of Japanese culture. Kind of feels like a dry run for a 2020 Olympics opening ceremony piece, so...More

I went to this show for free as an international student. I did not know the regular price (~5000 yen?), so I did not expect much. However, I was blown away by the performance of the cast and the variety of shows. Highly recommended.

Where to begin: no plot; wooden actors; nonsense songs. If the creators wanted to tell the story of a young girl's transformation through the seasons lead by her spirit guide Kitsune (a magical fox-spirit), in traditional and modern Japanese dance, music and anime --- then...More
