Tōkaidō Line, Japan's first long railway line connecting Tokyo and Kansai area such as Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, and started station was Shimbashi station, not Tokyo station which is the current starting station of Tokaido line. Here you will have some monuments remiding Japan's railway history though now surrounded by many skyscrapers.

When you look at the huge and chaotic Tokyo stations now, it's hard to imagine where it started, so this could be of interest. Hard to find but look for the buildings that appear in the photos. Unfortunately the building is not original and is mostly filled with a restaurant. There is a tiny exhibit downstairs about the original station... More

The building is at the first train station in Tokyo, and the exterior of the building which was built in 1872 and still in their care until today. Here you can find various information related to this transport, especially the history and variety of collections that they show.

This evening finally I found this museum. It is not as big as other museums in Tokyo. They only have two floors exhibition room. However this place is very important. If you admire railway system in Japan you should take a look at its history. This Old Shimbashi Station is the first train station in Japan. In this building there... More

Staying in Odaiba / Shiodome / Shinbashi

Neighbourhood Profile
Odaiba / Shiodome / Shinbashi
Odaiba is an entertainment hotspot with a giant ferris wheel, concert halls, amusement arcades and lots of shopping. It also boasts Oedo-onsen-monogatari, a hotspring that recreates old Edo-era ambiance and is very popular with foreign visitors. Shiodome has ultra-modern office buildings where you can often find restaurants with a great high-rise view of Tokyo. The neighboring area of Shinbashi is a district of much older commercial buildings and it's a great place to join 'salary men' enjoying a drink and snacks at street stalls under the railway bridges after work.
