Vorgium - Carhaix - A Roman archeological centre - fascinating visit
Aug 2018 • Family
The above centre has just been officially opened on 13th July 2018. The two ladies we spoke to in reception were very helpful and welcoming. They also spoke English. The visit of the archeological garden and of its permanent exhibition is free. For 4.50 euros, you can take part in a guided tour and benefit from a tablet, showing you all the aspects of this site in 3D. This is well worth it. It really brings the site to life. There is a very small gift shop. Parking is on the main road. The site is wheelchair friendly.

The inside exhibition is to be experienced before going to the external site, to get a better understanding. You can walk around the exhibits, using all the latest technology, such as touch screens, videos, films and interactive games, for example how the Romans would decorate their rooms. For my 13 year old, she found that much more appealing, as she didn't have to read tons of information. There was also a section on games played by the Romans, where you could have a go yourself.

All is in English, French and Breton. One minor criticism is that the first recording in English is of poor quality - we couldn't understand half of the information, which was given, because the narrator spoke with a strong accent and spoke very fast. The sound wasn't very good either, which didn't help. What would have helped possibly would have been some headphones, slower diction or subtitles.

The film shown on a large screen (with a sitting area) was very interesting and well put together.

Vorgium was the local Roman city, where most local roads would lead to. It was at the centre of commercial trade, which led to prosperity, This centre has been opened following large archeological finds after an extended period of excavation from 2000 to 2007.

Overall, the visit could take between one and two hours, depending on your personal interests. We found the visit really interesting, showing another of side of Brittany, e.g. Under Roman influence. We would recommend this visit, but WITH the tablet.
