As probably the oldest person in the premises I am usually daunted by such places which impacts on my ability to enjoy myself without looking foolish. The Night Cat is full of 20 somethings mainly, with the odd 'older' patron looking to 'mingle'. I hasten to add I was mingling with my wife. A great atmosphere is kept going by... More

We were a group of ladies coming here on a Sunday night. Salsa dance lessons were fun, the band was great, lots of dancers, nice venue. Awesome party atmosphere without drunks.

the security at this place is so absolutely intrusive that you have no chance to actually enjoy yourself... want to have a cigarette outside? prepare to be inspected everytime you come back inside, and sometimes arbitrarily refused entry back in, even though your stuff is in there, if they decide they don't like the look of you. seriously, the bouncers... I'm so upset with myself for not knowing about this place. Always lineups but I never investigated it. From the security at the door to barstaff to the fantastic band. The layout of the room and the different lighting was very special. I felt like I'd stepped into another world. I won't talk to much about the band except to... More

Great music BUT let down by all the sleezy pervets (mainly men) wanting to rub up against women on the dance floor, groups of which will circle the girls and turn the place into a sleezy dive. There are also to many wannabe salsa dancers who twirl around in a packed dance floor with no idea how to dance. Overall... More

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
