In Nerac for three weeks of culinary training and heard about the Chocolaterie Artisanale la Cigale. Having read Joanne Harris' book Chocolat, the town of Nerac is very similar to the town in the book, so a stop at this chocolaterie was a must. You walk into a room full of displays of hand made chocolates, all flavors and coco strengths. There are many to choose from ( and with three trips to this store I did not fine one I didn't like.) There is a glass wall where you can watch as the chocolate confections are make. Though there are pre-packaged bags with an assortment, it is less expensive to make your own selections. Worth a visit (even with kids) if you are in the region.

We decided to visit as we were in the area - I mean chocolate, why not? Saw the reviews and seemed great. It was smaller than we were expecting and we clearly didnt time it right as the cafe area was closing so we had a look into the shop and factory. We were surprised to be pretty much ignored and no one came to explain the set up or ask us anything just bonjour and then off the staff member went into the factory area. We could see where they made the chocolates but nothing much happening so we took a few minutes to wander around the shop. We did buy some chocolate but to be honest not as much as we would have done had we been invited to taste or even been shown around. Very disappointing. The chocolate was good but we ended up with single bars rather than selections. Couldn’t have been in there for more than 10 minutes. Shame as we were looking forward to this.

We went here based on recommendations. There were two people making the chocolates while we were there. We were able to sample some chocolate and then buy what we wanted. They even had a diabetic section of chocolates. Everyone that we tasted was excellent. I would recommend a visit.

We came on recommendation. First visit for us. Reception limits…. We have the impression of disturbing, because the saleswoman had to do something behind in a room.
We had seen on the site that we could visit the chocolate factory and chocolate welcome…. Well this information is false, apparently it is no longer relevant according to the seller.
So we took a basket to choose our chocolates to give to our family for Christmas.
We asked if we could taste a small piece of milk and/or dark chocolate to appreciate the work of the chocolatier… well, cold shower! “Sorry ma'am, we no longer have any chocolate tasting” Oops… you travel 40km to come to the chocolate factory following the recommendations… Ultimately we have the impression of disturbing. Apparently, the person who received us was the one in charge, because the two other people there were doing the gift wrapping and wrapping…
In short, almost €300 to buy chocolate for Christmas for the whole family, no tasting, no commercial gesture…
Even if the chocolate is very good, I will find very good artisanal chocolate elsewhere.
You lost me as a customer, my husband, following the unpleasantness of the saleswoman, did not even want me to buy your products.
Really very disappointed,
A moment that should have been a celebration turned into a disappointment.

If you're looking for some divine chocolate when in Nerac, this gem (slightly hidden off main street) is worth a visit. Not that divine chocolate is generally hard to find in France. ;-)
The back story is charming: this is the chocolaterie upon which Joanne Harris partly based her book, "Chocolat".
Great nibbles while here, and some superb gifts to bring home.

Hand made chocolates of all descriptions. Having visited on several occasions we always come away with unusual items - this time a chocolate salami, an assortment of chocolate 'pebble's (dried fruit and nuts coated in chocolate), some Easter chickens and some chocolate for cooking. Whilst some items are very expensive reflecting hours of individual artistry there is a wide selection of lovely chocolate products for all pockets. Best of all you are always offered some chocolate to taste on entering.

We first went here as part of a small group of 5 and had an opportunity to taste a few small samples and watched a movie about the growing and processing of chocolate. Our guide bought a number of different candy bars and different types of chocolates with various concentrations of coco.

We saw the signs to this chocolaterie and after having a quick look on Tripadvisor decided to stop by. It was definitely worth the trip as the handmade chocolates are delicious. You can pick up a little basket and choose from a huge range of individually wrapped chocolates or buy bags that already have an assortment inside. We found it was cheaper to choose our own. There is a glass window from the shop which looks into the part where the chocolates are being made although there wasn't much going on during our visit. There is a rumour that this was the inspiration for Joanne Harris's book (and later the film) Chocolat, and although I've heard that there are many chocolateries in France that make the same claim, they do have a picture of the author with the owners on their website! Whatever, I'm choosing to believe that it's true as it adds to the charm of the place! The whole visit took about 30 minutes, mainly due to our indecision on what to buy!! Definitely drop in here if you're in the area.

We were sent here but our hostess and enjoyed some delicious chocolate. The staff tried very hard to help although they didn't speak any English. Lots of tasting available. Plenty of variety including sugar free options

Anecdote:
Bizarre, slightly clinical decor from the 60s, chocolates presented in a banal way in cellophane on tables with multiple “Do not touch” notices.
Kind seller. I buy €50 worth of chocolates (fairly high prices, almost Parisian). When paying, as I want to gift wrap myself for various reasons, I ask for a small piece of Bolduc.
There are six large rolls of different colors, without brands, in front of the seller:
- No
- But it would do me a favor
- This is reserved for gift wrapping that we do ourselves
- But it would cost you 1 or 2 cents maximum and I'll buy it from you for 50€! It's not very commercial...
-No
This is how you lose a customer and gain a negative review on Tripadvisor for 1 or 2 cents.
