I recommend that you take the guided tour of Alarcon too see the Historic sites. The tour starts with the artist Jesus Meteo's Murals (an UNESCO site) painted in a 16th century church which had been abandoned for some time, the guide is very knowledgeable and explains the purpose behind the murals, three other sites are visited including the 8th century Castle (now a Parador) during which you are able to access the battlements. The only other way to access the battlements is if your are a resident of the Parador.

Jesus took us round and imparted his knowledge and love of Alarcón. The modern art mural by Jesus Mateo ( recognised by UNESCO) is unique and should be seen by many more people. He gives a very personal insight about a village that has been constantly inhabited for over a thousand years .

We were the only two to participate on this guided tour in Alarcón a lovely day in January. Only one of us is partly Spanish speaking, so it was a bit of a draw back that the tour was in Spanish only. But the guide did his best to speak slowly and communicate, and we got a lovely and knowlegdable two hours tour. We are both museumm people and trully interested in history and art, and we are so glad we decided to attend this! Would definetily do it again if we were ever going back, and recommends it to everyone interested in art and/ or history. The company are working on an English translation of the highlights - that will be ever so good to bring as one joins in on one of these tours. But even only in Spanish the tour is worth every penny! :)

From the moment Alarcon appears on the horizon, the obligatory car stop to take in the sight from the tower opposite the city and the river (one of the most awesome sights you are likely to see in Spain) and then passing through the two gates to this gem of a place, you will be truly uplifted and transported to another era. Take time to walk through the lovely silent streets and stop at the Parador for a coffee to take in the genteel atmosphere. Alarcon is a place that should not be missed if you are within a hundred kilometers distance.
