- Linda G7 contributionsThe most delicious ice cream ever!During a holiday in North Devon we just couldnโt stay away from the Hockings vanilla ice cream van in Westward Ho! Utterly creamy, delicious and moreish, not the cheapest but you get what you pay for with quality ingredients. Missing it already! Congratulations on such a brilliant product and every server was polite and lovely.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024
- TDstroudStroud, United Kingdom121 contributionsExcellent local ice creamWe happened across a Hockings van in Appledore and what a treat it was (twice, maybe three times โฆ and again in Westward Ho!). It is excellent quality ice cream and tastes divine. Itโs good value for money and definitely worth buying.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 April 2024
- WanderloweBarnstaple, United Kingdom343 contributionsHocking's, the best Ice Cream Ever, Consistently GOOD!Well itโs great to know that the best ice cream ever never changes. Hockings has in my view been the best ice cream I have ever tasted and remains so today. A 99 with clotted cream is out of this world. Local vans provide this wonderful confectionary and can be found based in Instow, Sainsburyโs car park at roundswell, BIdeford park, westward hoe and itโs home in Appledore. Itโs creamy and delicious, just got to be done. They do stop selling from October until March I believe so if you havenโt tried one yet donโt delay.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 June 2024

This is tough, growing up in North Devon we have (quite literally) spent hundreds and hundreds (likely more!) on Hockings ice cream over many years. We were delighted to see their return for the 2024 season at the park... but not their prices. Last year the price hike almost put us off completely, this year is the nail in the coffin - ยฃ4.10 for a choc waffle. That is the end of our Hockings love story and I'm sure, for many other locals sadly. I imagine there have been increases in costs/staffing but all of the new prices have put us off for good now. Hope to see Hockings rethink things in future in order to offer their great ice cream at a price locals can afford.

Travelled from S Cornwall to Appledore for the ice cream and it didnt disappoint . Vans are well located and nearly stopped in Bideford as spotted one driving through but glad we waited until parked at Quay car park in Appledore. Taste linerd long in the mouth on walk along coast path around Appledore and was so good had to come back for 2nd after lunch and this time added clotted cream topping . Take an ice pack and cool bag and you can take a tub(s) home !!

Gorgeous ice cream served in amazing cones (chocolate dipped waffle cones, honeycomb waffle etc) with flakes at really reasonable prices. Delicious. They only serve one flavour I've cream - vanilla - but it is amazing. They also sell ice lollies and freezer packs of ice cream (which do include different flavours).

Hockings are relying on their good reputation and yes, the ice cream is very good, however the value for money is so bad. I don't know if they are trying to rake back some profit after the pandemic but ยฃ1.90 for a tiny portion of ice cream is so bad. (It is literally half a small scoop) I am local and will not be buying again, on principal.

To be fair to Hockingโsโฆ.ice cream is not my number one fave treat by any meansโฆ. It ranks very very low behind Sauvignon Blanc, crisps, hummus and Cadburyโs Dairy Milk!
However I donโt get the โHockingโs Hypeโ at all, there are plenty of tastier ice creams out there.
And ยฃ6.50 for two mediocre cones one of which disintegrated before I reached the pavement less than ten yards.. (off Instow beach) and the other dripped to my elbows before I reached my mum in the car โฆ a mere 100 yds away on a dark grey cloudy eveningโฆ so not sure why it would melt so quickly?!

Without doubtโฆ..hands downโฆ.the greatest ice cream experience Iโve ever had in my life. For years of visiting my Mum in Great Torrington Iโve have had numerous ice creams from the van on the old bowling greenโฆ.and the vanilla ice cream is to die for. However, itโs only taken almost 20 years for me to realise that they have a โflavoursโ van in Westward Ho!! Well, on having one taste of their cherry flavour we now have to buy a 2 litre tub for every visit we make. THE GREATEST ICE CREAM EVER!!!! Thank you for your dessert wizardryโฆ.a firm tip of the cap to all involved!!!!!

Ok went to Westward Ho! today ,I go a lot nearly always have an ice cream from a hockings van ,today was no exception I had one scoop in a tub for ยฃ2.30 and was absolutely shocked at the miserable amount of ice cream that I was given , I complained to the young man serving me and said it was too small he gave no quarter and basically shrugged his shoulders so I said that will be the last I ever have from Hockings , I literally had enough ice cream to barely fill an egg cup ! Will buy my ice creams from supermarket in future

Parked up on Appledores front is Hockings ice cream van. We decided to try on a lovely sunny afternoon. There was a lady in the front taking money, and one preparing the ice creams in the back. Perfect set up.
Ice cream was really creamy and tasty. Really enjoyed it... and so did my little Spaniel.

I was looking forward to tasting one of these again, after 60 years of first experiencing this ice cream royalty. Having bought a double 99 on Northam Burrows, I was disappointed. Although good, it had lost that original battery rich taste, and although still superior to the bland more corporate ices, the magical and so distinctive flavour was just not apparent. Very sad.
Also the Burrows were jammed full of cars and families, and the lonely splendour of the beach beyond the pebble ridge with the surf crashing in the background was just not there.

Hi - how did you manage to travel with the ice cream? I live in leeds now and have been trying for years! just last weekend I had 2 freezer tubs (chocolate and salted caramel), wrapped them in bubble wrap, placed a bag of ice on top and put all of them in a cooler bag.. but they were all melted when we arrived in leeds 6 hours later. i still put them in the freezer tho and will try to eat it tonight and see... hopefully it won't give me a tummy ache
