Average, only because the staff tried their best to be friendly

Waiting time for meal to arrive after ordering was far, far too long and the Pizza seemed to come from a delivery service complete with delivery box.
The Cheese burger looked like those Supermarket packed just reheat type and the fish and chips were just about acceptable.
The establishment needs to decide what client base it wants to attract because we got the impression that they seem to cater for the younger end of the village locals and aren't that bothered about passing trade.
Don't think we will bother revisiting.

Welcoming pub with super friendly staff. Lovely pint of guiness and sky sports available. Duke box is brilliant! Will return.

Excellent Lunch, Great Service
Aug 2019
My husband and I, and two friends, had lunch here last week. The service was excellent and the staff extremely friendly, yet efficient. The choice of food was great and the quality and amount was amazing!

Would we return? Absolutely! We regretted not having our evening meal there, though we had eaten so much at lunchtime we would not have been able to eat much!

Definitely on our list of places to go back to.

Fading fast!
May 2019 • Couples
This was once a prestige hotel and part of a chain of 4* & 5* establishments. I'm afraid since management has changed at least a couple of times, the standards seem to have slipped.

Service at the bar is desultory, not unfriendly but no evidence of a welcoming smile. Service of our bar meals was dreadfully slow. The place is ready for a major 'Wake-Up' call!

Food far better than thelong wait
Aug 2018 • Family
I booked a table for three and arrived 10 minutes later and they could not find my reservation. After a short while they showed us to a table and they took our drinks order and left us with the menus. The menu was short with liimited choice.. After about five minutes they brought us two drinks, after about another five minutesI went to the bar to sort out the third drink. At this point they took our meal order and they then brought us another two drinks I had not ordered. After 30 minutes I went to the bar and enquired how much longer wait their would be for the food to arrive, and was informed by the barman that he would go into the Kitchen and enquire. The barman came and informed us they were ready to plate our meal up so I ordered further drinks. After finishing these drinks and the food had still not arrived we were getting up to leave. At this point the food arrived so we sat down and ate the meal. The food was exellent. The question being is whether it is worth going back for good food or would we have to wait 60 minutes again? To be fair the waitress was very pleasant but the kitchen was poorly staffed

Dump of a pub.
May 2018 • Couples
Very sorry but this pub looks like its falling down and derelict. There are plants growing out of the front of the building. We tried it anyway, behind the bar were teenagers and most of the clients were teenagers. We stayed for one drink and left and won't return. Bog standard spirits behind the bar, no flare, no individuality, we didn't like the pub - sorry.

Cracking market town pub
Nov 2017 • Family
Always love a visit to The Black Swan, many a night in there watching darts or dominoes, drinking excellent real ales, hand pulled gems, cheery staff, dog friendly and a pool table and darts out the back. A traditional pub, full of tales and banter and thick Yorkshire accent, charm and manners! Always a pleasure to polish off a gallon of ale and nibble on the fine after games sandwiches and nibbles. Cracking pub and staff to match. Looking forward to my next whistle wetting!

This is a very good traditional pub.

Probably the oldest in Kirkbymoorside, The Black Swan is a popular and very good pub. There are no pretensions; there is nothing trendy; this is just a good ordinary pub with excellent beer and friendly service.
