Seeing tour buses on this road is just scary; I expect that the drivers know their business, but still we wouldn't take a bus up (or down) this road for love nor money. Our little rental Subaru did fine (n.b. Japan requires international driving license) on this very steep and twisty road, would never try in bad weather; there is... More

"Visited" Okama Crater in mid July. Due to rain, we took the free shuttle from Kaminoya onsen (2 per day during at 9 or 9:30am and 1:25pm) as opposed to hiking from the top of the rope way from Zao Onsen. As we rode the shuttle up, we quickly realized that fog was going to be a issue. By the... More

The easiest way to get to the crater, if staying in Yamagata or Zao Onsen over a weekend in summer, is to catch a direct bus which leaves Yamagata railway station at 9.30am and returns at 2.30pm, allowing 2 hours to explore the crater area. This is not enough to walk the long trail around the crater itself, but great... More

I went there from Kamminoyama Onsen Station with a free shuttle bus. After visiting a touring information center Kamminoyama Onsen, the officer showed us the bus stop for the shutlle and gave us a discount voucher to take a ski lift to get to Okama crater. It cost us 680 Yen after the discount. It took us around 1 hour.

I woke up at 4.30am to prepare myself for the 1st train at 5.44am from yamagata to yamadara by Senzan line on track 7. It was cold in the morning and a jacket is definitely a must. The sky was not bright till around 6am when I reach Yamadara station and there was not a single soul around. At the... More

However you get to the caldera lake the view is magnificent, if you have the time hike all the way around.

This major attraction features a variety of activities for every tourist interest. Great hiking! Onsens, a cheese processing plant. The creator lake can be approached for either the "roba-no mimi" hiking course or the road winding up from town. The drive is will worth the effort.
