Great ski resort, spread out over 3 mountain areas with gongola access. Our skier group found Isola Mountain the best for our intermediate group.

The worst experience ever. Booked a day trip to Rusutsu and when arriving there, we were told all activities were cancelled!
When we were booking and boarding the bus, it already indicated that we were going for a day trip so our activities were already planned. However, they didn’t mention that it’ll be cancelled prior to us boarding the bus and when we got to the resort (2 hours away from Sapporo), all the activities were not available and cancelled.
What? After which, there was no cab back (which costs $200/one way but we were so bored) and the front desk told us to try to walk into a 1pm bus, but the bus captain instead said that we must reserve. Then why didn’t the front desk tell us and ask us to walk in instead?
It was this horrible the entire day, and we were left to do nothing because almost everything was closed due to bad weather. The resort could’ve told us that it was basically closed for the day. Even when the weather was better in the afternoon, they didn’t bother opening up the activities. Quite horrible frankly.
Would recommend not to come here and don’t bank on anyone giving you updated information. Info on the website is highly unreliable.

Great resort, fantastic snow and long runs especially on Mt Isola. And the views when the cloud lifts are just breathtaking

We cannot recommend the ski instructors and ski school here at Rusutsu Resort enough. We have had two family private lessons with Rachel H and she was fantastic. Having not skied for 6 years we were all out of practise and at different levels. She managed to set us all different things to work on with incredible patience and kindness. She could connect with each of our very different teenage boys and had a positive energy that has set the tone of joy in the snow for the trip. She showed us the mountain and created a fun atmosphere, giving the kids (and myself) the confidence we all needed. The younger two then had a kids ski school lesson and both left describing the things they had picked up here. They had another two friendly and patient instructors in Eliza and Cameron. The two leaders at the start listened to the needs of our youngest and took these in to account in setting up his ski school day. Right from the start the process when booking lessons before our trip was seamless and professional. We have loved our ski experience at this resort and highly recommend this ski school. Thank you.

Review for Powloha ski guide. Atsuto Furuya is former ski patrol and his son is a professional free rider. My family 9, 11 year old boys and wife had an epic day as my 11 year old said. Atsuto San just started Powloha this year and we were his first clients. He knows Rustustu mountain intimately and had a great day planned that started with untouched courduroy, then went to off piste powder stashes that were level appropriate for the whole family. His English is limited but his spirit and knowledge transcended language barriers and we felt very safe and comfortable all day. Google translate ultimately helped us communicate more directly. We asked him if he could take us to an Onsen on our way back and he brought us to a local place and taught us the appropriate way to experience and participate. Powloha@powloha.com to email him. He picked us up and dropped us off from Hirafu in Niseko area.

Best ski resort I've ever been to!
Was on a family holiday with my parents and kids, we couldn't believe how friendly all the staff were, how good the snow was and how amazing the ski instructors were.
We all had an amazing Christmas break, and we already can't wait to be back!
Thanks Rusutsu!

Our private lesson for me, husband and 8 years old son supposed to start 930am-1230pm.
First of all, the ski gears rental place is far far far away from the ski school (where the instructor was supposed to meet us). After spending almost one hour sorting out our rental jackets, pants and boots and what have you, we had to carry the heavy ski boards and sticks & walking awkwardly in the ski boots to the ski school lobby to meet the instructor. We were running a bit late as my 8 years old son was having difficulty carrying the heavy ski boards while walking in the deep snow. After 15 mins we finally reached the meet up point but to our horror, instructor said we still hv to walk further (another 10-15 mins or longer? It felt like eternity!) with the ski boards to the small hill where the lesson was supposed to be held at. By the time we reached the baby slope venue, we were all super exhausted and tired!!
Instructor taught us how to put on the ski boards, how to walk up the slope with the ski boards on, how to break.. a lot of theory blablabla! that’s all good and fine as we were all beginners. By 11am, what we did was skiing down the baby slope, take out ski boards and carry them up the slopes, put it back on and slide down- multiple times.
My son was so bored and tired kept doing the same thing over and over. The baby slope was hardly a slope! We couldn’t even slide down smoothly as the fresh snow was too powdery and they didn’t bother to compact the snow for us. I asked the instructor what’s next? Can he bring us to a steeper slope?? He said no sorry this is the only option as that day was the first day of operation for the ski resort therefore only that baby slope is opened for lessons.
We hv spent at least Sgd900 for the 3 hours lesson (including the rental of the gears and ski wears). I looked at him “u mean that’s all we are gonna do for the entire 3 hours lesson?” He replied “oh you are the boss! U make the call! U can either continue to walk up the baby slope and ski down, or u can chose to end the lesson earlier! Your call!” I was like “seriously???
3 hours hv passed and we didn’t do anything else besides than keep skiing down the baby slope! Was it a joke ???
On the other hand, my friend with 3 kids engaged an English speaking Japanese instructor on the same day. After teaching the family the basic skiing skills, he brought the whole family up the hill (he asked my friend to purchase ski lift passes). They had so much fun doing the real skiing unlike us can only skid down the pathetic baby slope!!
Seriously, a huge disappointment for the lousy instructor! Also too much walking from ski school to rental place to ski venue..Just our luck having to get this lousy instructor who has ruined our holiday!
Can we ask for a full refund?????

Thank you for visiting Rusutsu Resort. We wish to thank you for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback. We are sorry your ski lesson experience did not match your expectations, and we sincerely apologise. We will share your feedback with the international ski and snowboard school as we look to improve our service. All our lessons focus on safety, fun and improvement, and we apologise the instructor did not meet our standards on this occasion. We understand the lesson experience can be challenging, with beginner guests required to walk between the ski rental, ski school and beginner area. Also, we apologise we did not have more beginner terrain available to safely progress your lesson from the beginner area to the chairlift. Regrettably, the early-season snowfall was insufficient, with only limited trails open on the first few days. We wish to ensure all guests have a positive and memorable ski experience here at Rusutsu Resort. We will carefully consider this feedback as we look to improve our customer experience. Thank you again for taking the time to write this detailed review.
Kind Regards,

Stunning resort in a perfect mountain setting. Power soft snow and world class facilities. Free 2-hr shuttle from near Sapporo Station. Lots of other stuff to do if you dont want to ski with many restaurants for dining, from inexpensive food courts to fine dining. Try the onsen which has indoor and outdoor sections. Voted best Ski Resort in Japan 3 years running and truly deserved.

Went to the resort for a Conference and to Ski. Fantastic.
Stayed at the Westin Resort Hotel - very good facilities and service, Skiing was superb even though the snow was down a meter on normal and little powder. Trails were great, including some over 3km runs. Chairlifts and gondolas plenty and overall not too busy. Food occasionally average out on the ski field.
They went the extra mile to make sure that if things didn't go to plan, they made up for it - one lift wasn't working to get to the start of the mountain, so they provided buses door to door.
Would definitely return.

Of the two Marriott / Starwood ski resort properties in Hokkaido, this is the one I'll be coming back to.
Lots of choices for food and skiing.
For first time visitors with young families, there's more to do on the Rusutsu Resort side ( with ski school ). The facilities and lifts also feel newer on this side.
The Westin side is for hardcore skiiers.

Hi, we are staying near the resort in Dec and bringing our own ski and snowboards. We would like to find out about ski lockers at the resort:
1. Can we reserve ski lockers in advance at the resort?
2. What is the overnight cost for each ski locker?
3. How many lockers do I need for 2 kid snowboards, 1 set of kid skis and 2 sets of adult skis?

I want to hire gear from your resort, but I'm not staying at any of the hotels in the resort. Do I have to be a resident at your resort to be able to hire and use the ski lockers? And when hiring do I have to pre-book online or is hiring on the day okay?

Thank you for your inquiry.
For skiers those who stay at accommodations outside Rusutsu Resort, coin-operated lockers are available inside our hotels.
However, space of lockers may not be enough depending on the size of your luggage, so we recommend you to ask the pension you will stay to keep your luggage before check-in and then visit us to ski.
We hope this information helps and enjoy skiing here, at Rusutsu Resort.
