    River, Rum and Costa Rica
What a glorious day! We were offered fruit & juice before our river cruise. Once aboard, our boat captain took us close to crocodiles, iguanas, osprey, monkeys, and herons. Up close and personal with the wildlife. Back to the historical hacienda for a step back in time to see how the sugar cane was juiced, how coffee was made, tortillas rolled out and a delicious pre-lunch snack. We were served a fabulous buffet lunch on the breezy deck. To cap off our time, we enjoyed the Sabandi Rum distillery tour, right there on the Hacienda grounds. Roberto is knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. The entire rum process is explained with lots of time for questions. While rum tasting, everyone gets to choose their own ingredients to infuse into their glass of rum. For $25 you get to infuse a bottle of your own rum to take home. A magical day!

Palo Verde and National Wildlife Refuge Boat Tour
We recently took the boat tour on the Tempisque River. There were four of us in our group and we were lucky enough to have our own boat. Our guides (one guide and one guide-in-training) were animated and knowledgeable. Our boat captain was amazing at spotting birds and other creatures. With temperatures in the low 90s, we appreciated the cooling breezes of the river. The lunch that we were served was delicious and quite filling. I highly recommend this tour.

Fantastic Day in a Beautiful Setting
We did the boat tour and cultural tasting and it was a fantastic day. We saw so many crocodiles, birds, monkeys, lizards, etc. while on the boat tour. After the boat tour, we had a buffet lunch which was delicious. We then went to the cultural tasting although we had several kids with us (ages 11-18) who didn't want to do the cultural piece of the day so we had an abbreviated tour and tasting. We made tortillas which was fun, had cornbread, coffee and we sang. It was a beautiful place to spend the day, the staff were wonderful and we were happy we went.

We had a wonderful boat ride, lunch and Rum tour! We enjoyed seeing the crocodiles, monkeys and many different types of birds during the morning boat ride. We had a delicious lunch of chicken, rice and beans, and vegetables followed by a lesson on how to make rum from sugar cane. We enjoyed rum tasting and adding different ingredients to personalize our drinks to each guests tastes. We ended up bringing home two bottle to enjoy when we get back to the US!

Me and my husband had an amazing day here. We did the boat tour and saw lots of animals. Then after that, we had a tour of a replica of a traditional homestead. The Buffet Lunch was scrumptious, and then we finished things off with the Rum tour and learned how they make their special Rum. Each person got to choose three items to add to the Rum. If you chose to, you could then purchase a bottle of your very own recipe. The locale is just amazing, and we will definitely return in the Fall to go out onto the Wetlands for a birding experience in the early morning. We highly recommend this tour. Everyone was very knowledgeable and so very welcoming.

My group did the full private tour; which included the safari boat ride, the cultural tour, and the rum experience. We had such an amazing time!! On the safari we saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, a number of crocodiles, bats, and various bird species. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife!! The rum experience was also very engaging, as we learned about how the rum is made, and also got a chance to infuse our very own bottle with natural fruits and other herbs. The cultural tour gave us a glimpse into a traditional casita and also we had a chance to make our own tortillas by hand. The lunch they provided was amazing, the best Costa Rican food we had throughout our entire stay!! The staff were friendly, helpful, and had a wealth of knowledge to share with us about this beautiful hacienda! I give this excursion a 20/10, and highly recommend the full private experience, it is a must do!!

What a delight! We booked a boat tour and lunch. As soon as we arrived it was like the staff had been waiting for our arrival with friendly smiles and welcomes. Started with some juice, coffee, water and fruits. Then off to the boat tour where our tour guide, Daniel and boat captain, Donald took us for 1.5 hr tour to see lots of crocodiles (some eating fish and some babies), iguanas, lizards, herons, egrets and other wildlife. Then went back to the Hacienda for a casado lunch of chicken, beef or fish and local beer. Was wonderful and would recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica.

Booking this tour was one of the best decisions I made before we left for Costa Rica. If you want a little bit of everything, this is the tour for you! We were picked up from our resort in a very comfortable bus with great air conditioning and wifi. We traveled to the hacienda for coffee, water and a quick bathroom stop before heading to the river for the nature tour. As Carlos our tour director promised, we saw a different animal every three minutes (or less in most cases!) Carlos was incredibly knowledgable about the wildlife in the area and his pride for his country was contagious. We saw so many crocodiles, different species of birds, Capuchin and Howler monkeys! The diversity of life was spectacular.

After the boat tour, we did the rum experience and learned so much from Roberto the rummelier - he was so knowledgable and proud of the work done by the Sabandi Rum Distillery. The grounds were immaculate and the product was delicious. We each made our own glass of infused rum and 4 out of the 6 of us liked it so much we made our own bottles to take home. (They can travel back to the states in a checked bag with no issue - all four bottles survived the journey)

The lunch buffet at the hacienda was absolutely delicious - rice and beans, plantains, salads, fish, beef and chicken along with a delicious tamarind juice. If desired, you can also purchase from a full bar. The setting for the lunch was so peaceful and well-maintained we didn't want to leave - but we were rewarded with a wonderful cultural experience. We made a drink from the juices extracted from sugar cane and made authentic corn tortillas as well. We were full from lunch but were happy to try these treats as well.

It was such a great day and our guide Carlos helped us to learn so much about Costa Rica - I can't recommend this tour highly enough.

Is there a higher number than 5??

The tour started with the boat trip which included monkeys, crocodiles and birds. Our guide was amazing and so knowledgeable.

Next we did the cultural tour and learned how Costa Ricans used to live and cook. Again our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We also got make corn tortillas and eat them. Very fun and yummy!!!

Our day ended with the rum tour. BEST! THING!! EVER!!!!
Our tour guide Michael made me want to become a rum expert. Very knowledgeable and great at sharing about it. You could tell he loves his job and made the tour so fun. Bonus you get to spice up your own rum and take it him. So fun!!!

The early morning boat tour with Daniel was in formative with lots of unique wildlife including howler and capuchin monkeys, several species of herons, kingfisher, motmot, storks, curassow, iguanas, and lots of crocodiles. Instead of placing my husband and I in with a group tour we were lucky enough to get an individual tour with our own guide and boat captain. The hacienda is very historical with beautiful gardens. The coffee and food were excellent with great Costa Rican service. The roads close to the destination are rough through the sugarcane plantation. If driving on your own, follow the signs to get to your destination.

The wetlands boat and cultural experience were both informative and interactive, perfect for families with young children. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly. The hacienda itself is beautifully maintained, a must see. Included lunch has a lot of options and satisfied all the picky eaters in our family. Highly recommend if you are in Guanacaste to get an immersive experience in traditional culture and native animals!
