I never knew the name of this beach until I saw the reviews here on Tripadvisor. This beach is listed as one of the top 100 beaches in Japan but under a different name. Easy well marked staircase / path down to a rocky beach with amazing views. You can not see the beach from the parking lot you must walk through a tunnel first to get there but worth it. Also a lighthouse and other hiking trails close by

We drove almost 2 hours from Niseko to Cape Kamui. The drive was great, with beautiful coastal views along the way. After visiting Cape Kamui, we drove to our lunch place Misaki and then on to this place.

Parking was adequate and free, and the tunnel was just next to the parking lot. A short walk through the tunnel and one emerged at the viewing point with a splendid view of the Shimamui Beach.

There is a rather steep flight of steps leading down to the rocky beach.

If one were not going down to the beach, 15 minutes would be enough to take in the views and take a few photos.

Looking at google map, it say only 200m from parking to beach. However the map doesnt say that it is actually a vertical drop, a very steep and narrow one. It took us around 10m to get to the beach from top. And perhaps twice as long to get back up. Im sure you could do better if you have good lungs lol.

But the view is magnificent, certainly worth the time (and the pain).
There is a shop selling soft serve and fresh uni and other snacks near the parking lot.

First time visited this beach in winter, very few visitors. There are buses available from Otaru Bus Station, just check the bus schedule during the winter. Scenery is wonderful and should make a visit if you are in Otaru.

We walked through the 30-meter long narrow low dark tunnel, and found ourselves at the top of the vertical drop. At our feet, there lay the Shimamui Beach with the sea of Shakotan blue. The difference in altitude between the observation platform and the beach was about 70 meters. The trail was steep and narrow. We kept communicating with our legs and feet, taking our return trip to the observatory into consideration. My wife gave up in the middle of the descent. I kept on dropping, and reached the stony beach. The clear and clean water of the Shakotan-blue sea was lapping at pebbles, stones, and rocks. Sea fowls were flying around the 60-meter-tall folding-screen-like huge rock. I wished I could be a seabird to fly back the vertical drop.

The Western end of Hokkaido, slightly more than an hour of driving from Otaru, with very beautiful view en-route. The observation deck is only 5 minutes from the parking lot through a short tunnel. Free to enter though a donation is invited. Marvelous view which will invite you to descend to the beach below through a moderately constructed trail. It looks short but should be about 10 storey high. Having said that, it is not too challenging, took us about 10 minutes to go down and 15 minutes to climb back up. Affordable for most people. The restaurant near the parking lot also offer seafood bowls at reasonable price.

Such a beautiful place to visit, and great to wonder around for a bit of an adventure over rocks and sand. Really pretty and love it when visiting and travelling Japan. Would highly recommend f you want beautiful sights. Carpark outside the tunnel which leads to the beach which is good if travelling in a camper van etc.

We visited in a small rainy day, we park our car, an old couple ready to leave, 3 of us were the only there; when we leave, a tour bus was reached.

We walk pass the tunnel, it lead us to another world, lucky the rain was stop. We slowly walk down the stairs to the stone beach, there was a bit of rubbish, died sea urchin & many seaweeds. The whole area was smell of fresh seaweed, silent, a great place to rejuvenate your mind.

We drive from Otaru, Shimamui Coast was our 1st station, after Cape Kamui we head to Niseko to stay a night for rest. Of course, not forget to eat super fresh urchin rice bowl before we leave Shakotan peninsula.

My 6yo boy love to explore natural, we love this place. Just the young children need to be careful walk on the stone beach, & the steps to walk up was a bit hard for elderly. Well worth the drive, one of our highlight in our 3 weeks holiday in Hokkaido. Highly recommended & definitely will come again when we travel to Hokkaido.

Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful :D

On the way to more famous Cape Kamui, our Japanese host decided to guess and stopped here instead. It was a great decision. After you cross a tunnel you get the breathtaking views and can go down to the quite beach with a pleasant walk.
