We went for a car-ride from Otaru. It was an easy drive and we stopped over at Ogon Misaki, 黄金岬, before arriving here.
We took the walk from the cape right all the way, going east, hugging the hilly coastline. At one time, the trail became covered with the shrubs and the going seemed uncertain. We finally reached the observation deck, and took a rest here, overlooking the beautiful seascape.
It took us about 1 hour plus to go and return from this eastern most point !

This is also known as 島武意海岸 Shimamui Coast. After walking through a short and dark tunnel, a beautiful scenic view appeared. Shades of blue clear water seen from the top of the cape. Steps leading down to the rocky coast is a big hurdle before you can enjoy the spot below. After you reach the rocky "ground", please spend good time there as the way back UP is not friendly at all. One experience is enough. No wonder not many people around. Not for the faint hearted and weak knees.

We got there by tour bus. It's a surprisingly easy walk up to the top. There are stairs and also nicely paved walkway. Nicely maintained. There is no entrance fee required. Just enjoy the nature. I am not a person who exercise regularly but still find it not an issue to walk for 45 minutes. Along the way, there is a nice breeze and the scenery is just magnificent. Nice blue sea and blue sky. This place sort of remind me a bit like flower pot island in Tobermory ( Ontario, Canada )
As always, washrooms are extremely clean even in the wilderness. Something I am very impressed with places in Japan.

Most of the people must like Hokkaido in winter but i prefer green season. Because you can see this kind of beautiful nature creation.

Easily accessible by car. The day was sunny and clear when we were there so the view was breathtaking! Went there at the beginning of October so the place was not crowded. Round it off with a fantastic bowl of sea urchin ramen at the small restaurant just next to the car park!. Definitely worth a visit. Take in Cape Kamui and Ogon as well if you are driving.

Cape Shakotan is accessible by bus however make sure you time your visit properly so you don't have to wait for the next bus (may be 1.5 hours later!!)

There's a tunnel at the entrance and you can go down the stairs to get to the beach. It was very beautiful. There's also a hiking path, however it didn't seem like it was used much as there were overgrown grass which made me a bit uncomfortable as I was doing it alone. Regardless it was very scenic and glad I did it!

If you plan to do the hike, try to go with at least one other person. I went solo and got very freaked out when an animal moved in the overgrown bushes...could have been a fox or a bear...! Do bring a bear bell.

Visited this place during Japan's summer holidays. You'll see a lot of families with children in swimming costumes.

The view is too beautiful! The waters are crystal clear and very cooling. Perfect for the summer!

I drove to this place from Otaru (no tolls along the scenic coastal road). There are buses to this place too but not direct. I strongly recommend you to rent a car from Otaru. The drive up could be dangerous, as there are no mirrors to see incoming traffic. However, still better than going up by foot.

Free parking and free admission too!

There is a small eatery, vending machines, toilets and souvenir shop at the entrance.

The walk down to the shore can be dangerous, so wear comfortable shoes and shoes with good grip (Lesson learnt).

The rocks by the shore will be slippery if wet, so exercise caution.

If you want to swim, please wear your swimming costumes before going down, as there are no changing facilities by the shore.

Otherwise, ENJOY THIS BEAUTY!
